UWL Finishes Tied for Second at NCAA Championships

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field team finished tied for second at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Indoor Championships Saturday at The Reggie Lewis Center. The Eagles totaled 39.0 team points. Mount Union University (Ohio) finished in a tie for second with UWL with 39.0 points while North Central College (Ill.) won the national title with 55.0. 

UW-Eau Claire placed fourth (29.0) with Washington University (Mo.) and UW-Platteville tied for fifth (27.0). Massachusetts Institute of Technology was seventh (22.0) followed by Loras College, Iowa (21.0), UW-Oshkosh (17.0), UW-Stevens Point (16.0) and the University of Dubuque, Iowa (16.0) to round-out the top-10. A total of 67 teams scored points.

UWL has not finished lower than fifth at the NCAA III Indoor Championships since 1985. The Eagles' second-place finish is their third (2007, 2015, 2019) in school history. 

UWL has won an NCAA Division III record 18 indoor titles, including 11 of the last 18.  The Eagles have a nation-leading 33 national championships overall (18 indoor, 15 outdoor). UWL has earned 379 indoor All-American honors, the most in the nation. 

Josh Koenecke earned two NCAA III All-America honors on Saturday, finishing third in the 200-meter dash (21.70) and fourth in the 60-meter dash (6.88). It is the first career indoor awards for Koenecke.

The Eagles' Seth Holden also picked up a pair of All-America accolades Saturday, placing sixth in the 60-meter dash (6.99) and as a member of UWL's fourth-place 4x400-meter relay. He also earned NCAA III All-America honors on the Eagles' seventh-place distance medley relay (10:05.22) Friday. It is Holden's first career indoor All-America recognitions.

Charlie Handrick, Joshua Desorcy and Jake Sullivan also earned NCAA III All-America honors as members of Saturday's fourth-place 4x400-meter relay. It is the first All-America honors for all three student-athletes.

Jacob Teunas earned NCAA III All-America honors with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (48-4 3/4) Saturday. It is his second career award after placing eighth in the long jump in 2018.

The Eagles' Daniel Graf was 13th (51-7 3/4) in the shot put on Saturday.  

Noah Meeteer finished 13th (4,739 points) and Ben Jones 19th (4,024) in the heptathlon on Saturday. Meeteer and Jones competed in the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump on Friday and concluded on Saturday with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run. 

UWL earned seven NCAA III All-America honors on Friday. Individually, the Eagles' Andrew Jarrett placed third in the weight throw (67-4) while Thomas Schultz was fifth in the 5,000-meter run (14:32.90) and Samuel Sadowski sixth in the long jump (23-6 3/4).

It is Jarrett's third career All-America award in the weight throw after capturing the national title in 2018 and placing third in 2017. Schultz picked up his second career indoor All-America accolade in the 5,000-meter after placing sixth a year ago. Sadowski picked up his first career All-America award. 

UWL's distance medley relay of Zachary Shoemaker-Allen, Holden, Brian Hansford and Samuel Hinz earned NCAA III All-America honors with a seventh-place finish (10:05.22). It is the second All-America award for Hinz in the distance medley relay after being a member of the seventh-place realy in 2016. Shoemaker-Allen and Hansford earned their first career recognition.

Teunas placed ninth (23-0 1/2) in the long jump on Friday while Christian Morzinski was 10th (61-9 1/2) in the weight throw.  

UWL opens its 2019 outdoor season Saturday, April 6 with the Ashton May Invitational at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
