Box Score Austin, Minn. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep as they defeated St. Catherine University (Minn.) 3-1 and 5-1 Friday evening at the Packer Dome.
In game one, the Eagles got on the scoreboard in the top of the first as
Katie Block led off with a single and advanced to third on a single by
Sydney Murphy. Block then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Stephanie Cole.
After St. Catherine's tied the game up in the bottom of the second, UWL scored two runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead.
Emily Knight led off the fifth with a double and would score as Block reached on a sacrifice bunt. Cole then reached on a fielder's choice which forced Block out at second. After Cole stole second,
Kendra Leis doubled to score Cole.
St. Catherine's would threaten in the bottom of the sixth as they loaded the bases with two outs. However, Eagle pitcher
Caitlyn Hughes would force a ground out to get out of the jam and preserve a 3-1 lead. Hughes then shut the door in the seventh as well for the Eagles.
Hughes (2-0) picked up her second complete game of the season on the mound as she allowed one run on six hits while striking out three. Kathryn Proper (3-2) suffered the loss for St. Kate's as she gave up three runs on three hits while striking out two in seven innings of work.
Block led the Eagles in game one going 2-for-3 with a run scored while Leis was 1-for-3 with a run batted in (RBI).
In game two, the Eagles would score in the first inning again as
Sabrina Scardamaglia drove in a run with an RBI single. St. Kate's tied the game up in the top of the second but UWL quickly regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning as they scored two runs on two hits and two errors. Knight drove in a run with a double while Cole drove in the other run when she reached on an error.
The Eagles would add two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth as they got an RBI single from
Mallorie Segobiano while Knight drove in the second run when she reached on an error.
St. Kate's would never really threaten to score after the second inning as Eagle pitcher
Sydne Shattuck (1-0) allowed just three hits the rest of the game. Shattuck pitched her first complete game of the season as she allowed one run on six hits and four strikeouts in seven innings. Annabelle Schutte (1-2) suffered the loss as she gave up five runs on nine hits and five strikeouts in six innings of work.
Scardamaglia led the Eagles in game two as she was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Knight drove in two runs as she finished 1-for-3 with a run scored while
Kathryn Vander Schaaf went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
UWL will return to action on Sunday when they play a doubleheader against Loras College (Iowa) in Des Plaines, Ill. at The Dome at the Ballpark. Game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
