Box Score 2 Rochester, Minn. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team dropped a doubleheader Saturday afternoon as they lost 10-6 and 6-1 to Nebraska Wesleyan University at the RCTC Bubble.
The doubleheader was the season opener for both UWL and NWU as the Eagles are now 0-2 and the Prairie Wolves are 2-0.
In the first game, the Eagles got on the scoreboard first in the second inning as they scored five runs on four hits, 2 errors and a walk.
Mia Schmidtke and
Haley Radewan each led off the inning with singles and would score on back-to-back errors.
Emily Knight then drove in a run on a single while
Stephanie Cole drove in two runs with a single of her own.
The Prairie Wolves would then tie the score up at 5 in the bottom of the third inning as they scored five runs on five hits. Sydney Nickerson came up with the big hit for NWU as she drove in two runs with a single. UWL would retake the lead in the top of the fourth as
Sabrina Scardamaglia hit her first home run of the season. That lead was short lived as NWU tied the game up in the bottom half of the fourth when Rachel Mundt stole home.
The score remained tied until the bottom half of the sixth when NWU scored four runs on three hits and two errors. Danelle Snyder came up with the big hit for the Prairie Wolves as she drove in two on a single.
Mattie Bredeson (0-1) suffered the loss for UWL on the mound as she came on in relief and allowed five runs on seven hits while striking out two in 3.2 innings.
Caitlyn Hughes started the game on the mound for the Eagles but only lasted 2.1 innings as she allowed five runs on four hits while striking out three. Kailey Meyer (1-0) picked up the win for NWU as she threw a complete game allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out seven.
Schmidtke and
Mallorie Segobiano finished game one 2-4 with a run scored while Cole was 1-4 with two runs batted in for the Eagles. Nickerson led the Prairie Wolves going 1-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in.
In game two, both teams scored in the first inning. NWU got back-to-back run scoring doubles as they took a 2-0 lead. UWL would get a run in the bottom half of the first inning as Schmidtke drove in a run when she reached on an error. The Prairie Wolves added two more runs in the top of the second as Alycin Braun and Nickerson each drove in a run. NWU then added some insurance runs in the top of the sixth as they scored two runs on two hits and an error.
Grace Sommer (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Prairie Wolves a she went four innings allowing one run on three hits and five walks while striking out two. Meyer pitched the last three innings for NWU giving up one hit and two walks while striking out two.
Maddie Muelken (0-1) suffered the loss for the Eagles as she gave up six runs on 12 hits and one walk in seven innings of work.
Sydney Murphy led UWL in game two going 1-2 with a walk and a run scored while Schmidtke drove in the lone Eagle run of the game. Mundt led NWU going 2-4 with two runs batted in while Snyder was 2-4 with a run scored and a run batted in.
UWL will return to action on Saturday, March 2nd when they play Ripon College (Wisconsin) and the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at the RCTC Bubble. Game one is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. while game two is scheduled for 8 p.m.
