Softball Team Earns Doubleheader Sweep over UW-Stevens Point

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader sweep over UW-Stevens Point Tuesday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles won the opener, 4-0, and the nightcap, 6-1, to improve to 17-11 overall and 4-2 in the conference. UW-Stevens Point, losers of 13 straight, drops to 11-22 overall and 0-10 in the WIAC. 

UW-Stevens Point was the home team for the doubleheader after the games were moved from Stevens Point due to field conditions. 

UWL earned its fifth shutout of the season in the 4-0 win in the opener. Caitlyn Hughes (7-6) picked up the win, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing three hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Katie Klein recorded her third save of the season and 32nd in her career. She pitched 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. Klein's 32 saves are tied for second in all of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) softball history. She set the NCAA Division III record in 2017. The 32 saves is tied with Kellie Wilkerson (1999-2002) of Mississippi State, who holds the NCAA I record. Alex Lewis (2008-11) of NCAA Division II Alabama-Huntsville holds the all-time record with 48 saves. 

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Sabrina Scardamaglia scored on Dani Mestelle's two-out run-scoring double. Mia Schmidtke's seventh home run of the season in the top of the third gave UWL a 2-0 advantage. Grace Mindrup scored after a UW-Stevens Point error in the top of the sixth and Sydney Murphy's two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh knocked in Kerrigan Koch

UWL had 11 hits in the opener with Murphy, Schmidtke and Scardamaglia each finishing with two. 

Anna Palicks (5-10) took the loss for UW-Stevens Point, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and two runs with four strikeouts. Four different players had a hit for the Pointers. 

UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game as Brittany Baldwin came in on Murphy's single. UW-Stevens Point tied the contest in the bottom of the inning with an unearned run with Averi Kanyuh coming in after an Eagles' fielding error. UWL responded in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead as Scardamaglia tripled to start the inning and scored on Sarah Stewart's groundout.

The Eagles scored twice in the fifth on Murphy's groundout and Mindrup's double. Stewart's RBI double and Haley Radewan's run-scoring in the seventh finished the scoring. 

Sydne Shattuck (2-3) picked up the win for UWL, pitching 3.0 innings in relief, allowing two hits with one strikeout. All nine starters had a hit for the Eagles as UWL totaled 12 overall. Schmidtke, Mindrup and Koch each had two. 

Ashley Cohen (5-8) suffered the loss for the Pointers, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out three. Five different players had a hit for UW-Stevens Point.

UWL, 4-0 at home, returns to action Thursday, April 26 hosting UW-Platteville at 2 p.m.
