Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team competed at the UW-Eau Don Parker Open Saturday in McPhee Gym. No team scores were recorded.
The Eagles had four wrestlers place Saturday, including two second-place showings. UWL's
Reid Johnson finished second at 141-pounds while
Logan Schlough was second at 165. Johnson went 2-1 in the tournament. After a first-round bye, Johnson won by injury default over Jaime Valdez of UW-Whitewater. He won by major decision (12-3) over Ryan Rodorigo of St. Cloud State University (Minn.) in the semifinals before dropping the title match by major decision (11-2) to unattached Brent Jones.
Schlough went 4-1 on the day to finish second at 165-pounds. He won by fall (2:27) over Nathan Hunt of Nebraska Wesleyan University in the first round and by technical fall (16-0) over Travis Ostby of Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) in the next round. Schlough won by decision (3-1) over Devin Donovan of St. Cloud State (Minn.) in the quarterfinals and by decision (6-5) over Lucas Jeske of Augsburg University (Minn.) in the semifinals. He lost by fall (:47) to unattached Carson Brolsma in the championship.
Michael Murnane finished fourth at 157-pounds for the Eagles with a 3-2 record. He had a first-round bye before a win by decision (6-3) over Izzac Suarez of Luther College (Iowa). Murnane lost by major decision (15-7) to Bryce Zdanovec of Augsburg (Minn.) in the consolation bracket, but came back to record a win by fall (1:27) over Josh Verbeten of Augsburg (Minn.) and by decision (5-1) over unattached James Berg. He dropped the third-match by decision (5-3) to Travis Deegan of Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.).
UWL's
Sawyer Sarbacker won the consolation championship at 133-pounds with a 3-1 record. He lost by decision (2-0) to Trenton McManus of Minnesota State University, Mankato in the first round, but came back to win three straight matches. Sarbacker won by major decision (12-2) over Luke Wallace of St. Olaf College (Minn.) and by technical fall (18-0) over unattached Paul Konrath. He won the consolation title with a win by decision (10-6) over unattached Jacob Barnett.
Sam Wenzel went 2-2 on the day at 149-pounds. After forfeiting his opening dual to Gilbert Valadez of Luther (Iowa), Wenzel won by major decision (17-9) over Elias Audley of UW-Eau Claire and by fall (3:00) over Boone Young of Augsburg (Minn.). He then lost by major decision (14-1) to unattached wrestler Tanner Day.
Tristan Jenny (133-pounds),
Jack Gille (157) and
Adam Gusky (197) each went 1-2 in the tournament. Jenny lost by major decision (12-2) to Aaron Dick of Concordia-Moorhead in his first match before winning by fall (1:22) over Jorge Hernandez of Nebraska Wesleyan University. He then lost by technical fall (16-0) to Barnett. Gille lost by major decision (11-2) to unattached Don Boone in the first round before winning by medical forfeit over unattached Devin Bahr. He then lost by decision (11-9) to unattached Michael Petersen. Gusky received a first-round bye and then won by decision (9-3) over unattached Logan Degenhardt. He lost by major decision (11-2) to Lance Benick of Augsburg (Minn.) in the quarterfinals and by fall (3:00) to Kody Vandeneykel of Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) in the consolation.
UWL's
Spencer Hutchinson and
Cal Hansen both went 0-2 at 149-pounds Saturday.
