Whitewater, Wis. - Five members of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team competed at the Willie Myers Open Saturday afternoon at UW-Whitewater's Kachel Fieldhouse. No team scores were recorded as all five wrestlers placed for the Eagles, including
Josh Stenger who finished third at 133-pounds with a 3-1 record.
After opening with a loss by technical fall (17-2) to Markus Simmons of Iowa State University, Stenger won three consecutive matches to finis third. He won by major decision (18-6) over unattached wrestler Matt Anderson in the consolation first round. He then won by decision (9-4) over teammate
Tristan Jenny in the consolation semifinals before winning by decision (3-1) over unattached Zac Denny.
Jenny finished fifth at 133-pound for UWL with a 2-2 record. He won by decision (5-3) over Ramiro Vasquez Concordia University Wisconsin in the quarterfinals before losing by technical fall (20-5) to unattached Austin Gomez. Jenny lost by decision (9-4) to Stenger in the consolation semifinals, but placed fifth a major decision (14-4) over Vasquez in the fifth-place match.
UWL's
Logan Schlough placed fifth at 165-pounds while
Cal Hansen was sixth at 149-pounds for the Eagles and
Lee Fuller sixth at 184-pounds. Schlough went 3-2 on the day. He lost by decision (4-2) to Skyler St. John of Iowa State in the quarterfinals after a first-round bye. Schlough then won by decision (6-1) over Paul Ladd of Lakeland College (Wis.) in the second round of the consolation bracket and by decision (8-3) over Eric Martinson of Concordia Wisconsin in the third round. He lost by decision (3-0) to Michial Foy of Harper College (Ill.) in the consolation semifinals, but won by forfeit in the fifth-place match.
Hansen went 2-3 at 149-pounds, winning by fall (1:16) over unattached Tanner Lundgren in the first round and by decision (8-5) over unattached Tyler Shilson in the quarterfinals. Hansen lost by decision (11-4) to unattached Ryan Leisure in the semifinals. He then lost by decision (2-1) to Wilder Wichman of UW-Whitewater in the consolation semifinals and by decision (9-2) ot unattached Kristian Vasquez in the fifth-place match.
Fuller also finished 2-3 on the day at 184-pounds. He won his opening match by decision (6-0) over Merrick O'Donnell of Concordia Wisconsin and by decision (5-4) over Dominic Gallo of Harper (Ill.) in the quarterfinals. Fuller then lost by major decision (13-2) to unattached Alec McDowell in the semifinals and by decision (4-2) to Jamie Gehling of Upper Iowa University in the consolation semifinals. He dropped the fifth-place match by decision (6-4) to David Cushing of North Central College (Ill.).
UWL returns to action Tuesday, January 23 hosting UW-Platteville at 6:30 p.m.
