UWL Places Seventh at Matman Invitational

Mount Vernon, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team, ranked 12th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NCWA), placed seventh at the Cornell College (Iowa) Matman Invitational Saturday.  The Eagles finished with 65.5 team points while Augsburg College (Minn.) won the team title with 133.0.  A total of 17 teams competed.

UWL's Josh Fiegel placed fourth at 133-pounds.  After a first-round bye, Fiegel won by fall (3:37) over Aaron Dick of Concordia-Morehead (Minn.).  In the quarterfinals, he won by decision (6-2) over Amier Khamis of Coe College (Iowa) before falling by major decision (15-5) to Augsburg's (Minn.) Sam Bennyhoff.  Fletcher Green of Coe (Iowa) defeated Fiegel in the third-place match by decision (8-2).

At 197-pounds, UWL's Adam Gusky and Austin Cook shared fourth-place after both advancing to the third-place match (not contested). Gusky won by forfeit in the first round over Coe's (Iowa) Frantony Lewis, and won in sudden victory (9-7) over Brent Chambers of Augsburg (Minn.).  Gusky won by decision (2-1) in the quarterfinals over Kendale McCoy of Cornell (Iowa), before falling by decision (5-3) to Kody Vandeneykel of Concordia-Morehead (Minn.) in the semifinals. 

Cook advanced to the third-place match with wins by fall (5:09) over Costas Hatzipavlides of the Iowa State Wrestling Club and Jordan Challis of Coe (Iowa) (:20) after a first-round bye.  He lost by fall (4:21) to Guy Patron Jr. of Loras College (Iowa) in the semifinals. 

UWL's Hayden Schlough finished fifth at 141-pounds with a 4-1 record, including a major decision (12-2) over Michael Derin of Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) in the fifth-place match.

At 149-pounds, Cal Hansen placed fifth, going 5-1 for the tournament, including three wins by fall. He won by decision (10-5) over Aaron Wilson of Augsburg (Minn.) in the fifth-place match.

Jackson Schoen and Grant Zamin placed sixth at 157-pounds.  Schoen was 4-2 on the day, including two wins by fall.  Zamin won five consecutive matches after losing in the first-round to advance to the fifth-place match against Schoen (not contested).
