Five Wrestlers Earn Title at Augsburg Open

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team competed at the Augsburg University (Minn.) Auggie-Adidas Invitational Saturday in Si Melby Hall. No team scores were recorded, but the Eagles had five individual champions.

In the Gold Division, Zach Villarreal captured the 125-pound title with a 4-0 record. He won by major decision (12-2) over Jared Hensley of Upper Iowa University in the first round. Villarreal then won by fall (6:42) over Brian Maas of Iowa Lakes Community College in the quarterfinals and by decision (6-4) over Victor Gliva of Augsburg (Minn.) in the semifinals. He won the title with a win by decision (10-7) over Andrew McFall of Minnesota State University Mankato.

UWL's Sean O'Neil won the 184-pound division in the gold bracket with a 4-0 mark. He won by fall (:45) over Austinn Goin of William Penn University (Ohio) in the opening round and by decision (5-3) over Jonathan Zarnke of Augsburg (Minn.) in the quarterfinals. O'Neil won in a tie-breaker (8-7) over Connor Williams of Upper Iowa in the semifinals and won the title with decision (3-1) over Luke Dodd of Saint John's University (Minn.).

Konrad Ernst captured the Gold Division crown at 285-pounds, also with a 4-0 record. He won by fall (3:26) over Montana Fuller of Iowa Lakes in the first round and by fall (3:48) over Will Wan of William Penn (Iowa) in the quarterfinals. Ernst earned a win by decision (3-2) over Keenan Feldpausch of Luther College (Iowa) in the semifinals. He captured the championship with a win by fall (2:49) over Troy Beaman of St. Olaf College (Minn.).

UWL had two wrestlers win titles in the Silver Division. Josh Stenger took the 125-pound division with a 3-0 record. He won by fall (3:47) over Noah Padilla of Wartburg College (Iowa) in the quarterfinals and by technical fall (16-0) over Nadhelo Charles-Pierre of William Penn (Iowa) in the semifinals. Stenger won by medical forfeit over Abraham Dickenson of UW-Eau Claire to capture the title.

Adam Gusky won the 197-pound title with a 3-0 record. He won by decision (5-2) over Sheldon Rodriguez of William Penn (Iowa) in the quarterfinals and by decision (7-6) over Bodie Garnier of Upper Iowa in the semifinals. Gusky took the championship with a overtime win (7-5) over James Huntley of UW-Eau Claire.

UWL had nine other wrestlers place Saturday. In the Gold Division, Sawyer Massie (174) and Wesley Schultz (197) both placed third with 3-1 records with Schultz recording one win by fall. Nelson Baker (125) and Spencer Nevills (149) finished fourth with 2-2 marks. Baker earned one win by fall.

In the Silver Division, Grant Zamin (157) finished second while Spencer Hutchinson (149) was fourth and Cal Hansen (149) fifth. Zamin and Hansen each went 3-1 while Hutchinson finished 2-2 with one win by fall.

In the Bronze Division, UWL's Sam Wenzel (149) and Jacob Gille (157) both finished fifth. Wenzel went 2-1 while Gille finished 3-1 with two wins by fall.

Jackson Schoen (157) and Mitch Hertel (174) took consolation titles in the Gold Division Saturday while Josh Fiegel (133) and Chase Pomeroy (174) won the consolation title in the Silver Division. Schoen, Hertel and Fiegel each went 3-1 with Hertel earning one win by fall while Pomeroy finished 4-1 with one win by fall.

The Eagles' Thomas O'Brien (141) went 2-2 in the Gold Division while Quinn Miracle (133), Aaron Sweeney (157) and Michael Murnane (157) all finished 1-2. Logan Schlough (165) finished 0-2.

Tristan Jenny (133) went 1-2 with his win by fall in the Silver Division while the Eagles' Sawyer Sarbacker (133) and Lee Fuller (184) both went 0-2.

UWL returns to action Saturday, December 2 hosting the Candlewood Suites Duals. The Eagles face Wartburg College (Iowa) at 9 a.m., Concordia College (Minn.) at noon and Cornell College (Iowa) at 1:30 p.m.
