Box Score 2 Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team dropped a pair of games at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (presented by Culver's) Saturday at UW-Eau Claire's Gelein Field at Carson Park. The Eagles fell 2-0 to UW-Whitewater in a winner's bracket game and 5-0 to UW-Eau Claire in an elimination game. UWL is now 26-14 on the season.
UW-Whitewater broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth Saturday. Mallory Klotz singled to start the inning and moved to second on Jessica Kaemerer's sacrifice bunt. After a fly-out for the second out of the inning, Amy Ricci doubled to center field to score Klotz.
UWL was held without a base runner until
Brittany Baldwin's infield single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. She advanced to second on a passed ball, but failed to score. The Warhawks added to their lead in the top of the seventh as Nikki Mikosz doubled with one out and was replaced by pinch-runner Kayla Seymour. After a strikeout, Hannah Taylor's RBI single scored Seymour to make it 2-0.
Caitlyn Hughes (10-3) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing five hits and one run while recording two strikeouts.
Katie Klein pitched 1.0 inning, allowing two hits and one run with two strikeouts.
Baldwin was the only base runner to reach off UW-Whitewater's Julia Camardo with her infield single in the sixth. Camardo (16-4) earned the complete-game win, going 7.0 innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts. Seven different players had a hit for the Warhawks.
With the win, UW-Whitewater advances to Sunday's championship game versus UW-Eau Claire. The Blugolds need to defeat the Warhawks twice to earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III Championship.
In the elimination game between UW-Eau Claire and UWL, the Blugolds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Bria Calder's single to score Gracia Larson. UW-Eau Claire scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth as Calder and Evie Schaller each had two-run doubles. UW-Eau Claire advanced to face UWL after a 1-0 victory over UW-Oshkosh Saturday.
Megan Nelson (4-3) took the loss for UWL, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, four runs and two walks with one strikeout. She finished 2-for-3 at the plate, recording two of the Eagles' three hits.
Sydney Schemenauer finished 1-for-3 for the Eagles.
Zana Lorbetske (10-5) picked up the complete-game win for UW-Eau Claire. She went 7.0 innings, allowing three hits and one walk while recording eight strikeouts. The Blugolds finished with nine hits as Calder, Rachel Heffel and Kelsey Meredith each had two.
