Box Score 2 River Falls, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader sweep at UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon at Ramer Field. The Eagles won the opener, 9-4, and the nightcap, 10-0 in five innings. UWL improves to 23-12 overall and 8-4 in the WIAC while UW-River Falls drops to 12-20-1 overall and 3-8-1 in the conference.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the opener as
Megan Nelson scored on a
Sydney Murphy RBI single. The Falcons came back in the bottom of the first with four runs, highlighted by a two-run Katie Thompson home run.
UWL cut the lead to 4-2 with a run in the top of the second as
Alecia Faber tripled and scored on a UW-River Falls error. UWL took a 8-4 lead with six runs on four hits and one error in the third. The inning was highlighted by Nelson's three-run two-out double. The Eagles added a run in the top of the fifth as
Brooke Baldwin scored on Nelson's sacrifice fly.
Jessie Carignan (7-4) earned the victor for UWL, pitching 4.2 innings in relief. She allowed three hits with one strikeout. The Eagles had nine hits in the opener with Murphy, Faber and
Emily Holldorf each finishing with two. Nelson had four RBI while Faber scored twice.
UWL quickly got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in the nightcap as Nelson came in on
Ashley Lindstrom's single, who later scored on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning. The Eagles scored seven runs in the third and added one in the fifth.
Sydney Schemenauer had a two-run single and
Sarah Mueller a two-run double to highlight the seven-run third inning. Nelson hit a solo home run in the fifth.
Caitlyn Hughes and
Heather Grelle combined on a three-hit shutout for UWL. Hughes (8-2) picked up the win, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out four. Grelle went 1.0 inning with two strikeouts.
The Eagles totaled eight hits with Schemenauer finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Nelson and Mueller each had two RBI.
UWL wraps up its regular-season hosting UW-Whitewater Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. at North Campus Field.
