Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of UW-Platteville Friday afternoon at North Campus Field, winning 2-0 in the opener and 10-2 in five innings in the nightcap. The Eagles improve to 21-12 overall and 6-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pioneers fall to 3-19 overall and 0-6 in the conference. UWL has now won eight of the last nine meetings between the teams.
Megan Nelson and
Katie Klein combined on the shutout in Friday's opener. Nelson (4-2) earned the win, going 6.0 innings, allowing two hits and one walk while recording three strikeouts. Klein picked up her 10th save of the season, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing one walk with one strikeout. It was UWL's third shutout of the season while UW-Platteville was shutout for the third straight game overall.
With the win in the opener, UWL clinched its ninth straight season with at least 20 wins.
The Eagles scored both of the runs in the first game in the bottom of the second.
Ashley Lindstrom and
Emilie Wiltzius hit back-to-back doubles to make it 1-0. Wiltzius later scored on
Sydney Schemenauer's two-out RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
Nelson did not allow a hit until a Dakota Stout single to start the top of the fifth. UWL turned four double plays in the first five innings.
UWL finished with seven hits as Wiltzius went 3-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. Lindstrom went 2-for-3 with one run.
Jess Butzen (2-9) took the loss for UW-Platteville, going 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out three. Stout and Crystal Rote had a hit for the Pioneers.
UWL raced out to a 7-0 lead after two innings in winning the nightcap. Three runs scored on five hits in the bottom of the first. Nelson scored on a Wiltzius sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
Emily Holldorf scored on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead and
Sydney Murphy came in on Schemenauer's RBI double to make it 3-0. The Eagles added four runs in the bottom of the second. Lindstrom and Wiltzius each recorded RBI singles for a 5-0 advantage. Murphy's bunt single knocked in a run and
Brooke Baldwin scored on a Schemenauer sacrifice fly.
Wiltzius hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to give UWL a 8-0 lead.
UW-Platteville got on the scoreboard for the first time in four games in the top of the fifth on two-out run-scoring singles from Thiaana Wegner and Stout. UWL ended the game by the eight-run rule in the bottom half of the fifth. Wiltzius had an RBI single to score Holldorf and
Jenny Gallagher's RBI single knocked in Lindstrom for the final tally.
Heather Grelle (3-1) earned the win for UWL, pitching 1.1 innings of relief. She allowed one walk.
Caitlyn Hughes started for the Eagles, going 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
Jessie Carignan pitched 1.0 inning, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out one.
The Eagles totaled 16 hits as eight of nine starters recorded at least one. Wiltzis finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored while Holldorf, Lindstrom, Murphy, Hughes and
Brittany Baldwin each finished with two hits. Nelson, Holldorf and Lindstrom each scored twice.
Brooke Posey (1-3) suffered the loss for UW-Platteville, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing 12 hits, eight runs and two walks. The Pioneers finished with six hits as Posey went 2-for-2.
