Box Score 2 Oskaloosa, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a pair of games Saturday at Lacey Park, falling 12-8 to Buena Vista University (Iowa) before coming back to earn a 4-2 win over the University of Dubuque (Iowa). The Eagles are now 14-7 on the season.
UWL and Buena Vista (Iowa) were tied 3-3 after two innings Saturday.
Sydney Murphy had a two-run single in the bottom of the first for UWL and
Brittany Baldwin reached on an error in the bottom of the second to knock in a run.
Buena Vista (Iowa) took a 5-3 lead in the top of the third before UWL cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the third and took its first lead of the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-5 lead. Murphy's two-run double gave the Eagles a 6-5 lead and later scored on a Beavers' error.
The Beavers tallied six runs in the top of the sixth for a 11-7 advantage, highlighted by Autumn Boland's two-run home run.
UWL cut the lead to 11-8 in the bottom of the sixth on a
Ashley Lindstrom home run, but Buena Vista (Iowa) added to its lead with a run in the top of the seventh on Cheyanne Boland's solo home run.
Heather Grelle (1-1) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and six runs (none earned) with two strikeouts.
Megan Nelson started for the Eagles, going 2.0 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out two. UWL finished with 11 hits as Murphy went 4-for-4 with one run and four RBI. Lindstrom went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Keely Bycroft (1-0) earned the win for Buena Vista (Iowa), going 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and one run with two strikeouts. Jenna Falline picked up her first save, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing eight hits, seven runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out four. The Beavers totaled 18 hits with Marissa Schmidt finishing 4-for-5 with three RBI. Cheyanne Boland went 3-for-4 with three runs.
Dubuque (Iowa) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in its game versus UWL on an Eagles' throwing error. UWL scored four times in the top of the fourth.
Erin Maletzke scored on a Dubuque (Iowa) error to tie the game at 1-1 and
Jessie Carignan came in on
Emily Holldorf's groundout to make it 2-1. Baldwin scored on an error for a 3-1 lead and
Alecia Faber scored on a
Emilie Wiltzius groundout.
The Spartans cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth as Andrea Smith scored on a Tori Woltz single.
Carignan (5-2) earned the victory for UWL, going 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts.
Katie Klein picked up her seventh save of the year, pitching 1.0 inning. The Eagles had 10 hits as Murphy went 3-for-4.
Mackenzie Kyle (5-4) took the loss for Dubuque (Iowa), pitching 7.0 innings, allowing 10 hits, four runs (three earned) and five walks with eight strikeouts. The Spartans finished with seven hits as Smith and Courtney Markin each had two.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, April 5 hosting UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at 3 p.m. at North Campus Field.
