Softball Drops Twinbill at League Leading UW-Oshkosh

Megan Nelson went 4-for-7 in Sunday's doubleheader.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Oshkosh, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team dropped a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader Sunday afternoon at UWO Softball Park.  The Titans won the opener, 4-1, and the nightcap, 1-0 in 10 innings.  UWL falls to 19-12 overall and 4-4 in the WIAC while UW-Oshkosh improves to 16-4 overall and 8-0 in the conference.

In the opener, the Titans tallied four times in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.  Brianna Witter scored on Erika Berry's single to make it 1-0 and Abby Menting followed with a three-run double to knock in Haley Bayreuether, Berry and Lauren Torborg.  All three runs were unearned.

UWL scored its run in the top of the sixth with Brittany Baldwin scoring on a Emilie Wiltzius sacrifice fly.

Megan Nelson (3-2) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing three hits, three runs (one earned) and four walks.  Seven different players had a hit for the Eagles.

Sara Brunlieb (8-2) picked up the complete-game win for UW-Oshkosh.  She pitched 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits and one run with five strikeouts.  The Titans were limited to four hits with Menting finishing 2-for-3 with three RBI.

In the nightcap, UW-Oshkosh scored the only run in the bottom of the 10th. Caitlin Hoerning singled with one out and advanced to second on a Paige Giese sacrifice bunt.  Elizabeth Fonk then singled to knock in Hoerning for the win.

Caitlyn Hughes (7-2) took the complete-game loss for UWL, pitching 9.2 innings, allowing five hits, one run and one walk while recording six strikeouts.  The Eagles finished with eight hits in the nightcap, but left 10 runners on base, including eight in the final four innings.  Nelson finished 3-for-4 for the Eagles.

Brunlieb (9-2) earned the win in the nightcap as well, pitching 0.1 of an inning.  Giese started for the Titans, going 9.2 innings, allowing eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Five different players had a hit for UW-Oshkosh as the team was held to nine hits in the doubleheader.
 
UWL returns to action Thursday, April 21 hosting UW-Platteville at 3 p.m. at North Campus Field.
