Box Score 2 Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a doubleheader sweep at UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon at McCarty Field. The Eagles won the opener, 5-2, and the nightcap, 4-2, to improve to 19-10 overall and 4-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Pointers drop to 7-16 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Caitlyn Hughes (7-1) earned the win in the opener for UWL, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out nine.
Katie Klein pitched 2.0 innings for the Eagles, allowing three hits, two runs and two walk with three strikeouts.
UWL took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second as
Emilie Wiltzius reached by error to start the inning. She advanced to second on
Alecia Faber's sacrifice bunt and scored on
Sydney Murphy's RBI single. Murphy later scored on a Hughes single to right field.
The Eagles added to their lead with three runs in the top of the fifth as
Brittany Baldwin singled, stole second and scored on
Megan Nelson's double. Nelson later scored on a Faber groundout and Wiltzius came in on Murphy's run-scoring single. UW-Stevens Point scored twice in the bottom of the sixth as Katie Uhlenbrauck and Justine Ertl drew bases-loaded walks.
UWL finished with nine hits in Saturday's opener as Baldwin and Murphy each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Murphy had two RBI while Wiltzius scored twice.
Maddie Durie took the loss for UW-Stevens Point, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing six hits, five runs and one walk with one strikeout. Four different players had a hit for th Pointers.
The nightcap stayed scoreless until UWL tallied two runs with two outs in the top of the fifth.
Heather Grelle singled to start the frame and and advanced to third on
Emily Holldorf's two-out single. After a UW-Stevens Point pitching change, Holldorf stole second and Grelle scored after Nelson reached on a Pointers' error for the first run of the game. Holldorf later scored on a double steal attempt for a 2-0 lead.
UWL took a 4-0 lead in the top of the seventh with a pair of two-out runs.
Sydney Schemenauer singled with one out and advanced to second on Holldorf's two-out single. Nelson followed with a two-run double scoring both runners. UW-Stevens Point scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and left the potential tying runs on base to end the game. Ertl's RBI single cut the lead to 4-1 and Alyssa Cooper came in on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 4-2, but Klein recorded the final out to secure the victory.
Jessie Carignan (6-4) earned the win for UWL, pitching 4.0 innings, alowing four hits and one run with two strikeouts. Grelle pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two walks with one strikeout while Klein went 1.0 inning, allowing two hits, two runs and one walk while recording two strikeouts.
The Eagles totaled eight hits in the second game Saturday with Nelson finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI. Holldorf finished 2-for-4 with two runs.
Amelia Heup suffered the loss for UW-Stevens Point, going 4.2 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and one walk. The Pointers had six hits as Payton Mix finished 2-for-3.
UWL returns to action Sunday, April 17 with a WIAC doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh starting at 2 p.m.
