Softball Team Drops Doubleheader at Nationally-Ranked Simpson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Indianola, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team dropped a doubleheader at 20th-ranked Simpson College (Iowa) Friday afternoon at the Simpson Softball Complex, falling 7-5 in the opener and 13-1 (5 innings) in the nightcap.  The Eagles drop to 13-6 on the season while the Storm improve to 21-4.  Simpson (Iowa) is ranked 20th on this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll.

UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in in the opener as Brittany Baldwin scored on a Emilie Wiltzius RBI single.  Simpson (Iowa) came right back in the bottom of inning with six runs.  Tori Haag hit a solo home run to lead-off the bottom of the inning to tie the game and Abbie VanVleet gave the Storm a 4-1 lead on a three-run home run later in the inning.  Riley Fisher's two-run single made it 6-1.

The Storm added a run in the bottom of the third to lead 7-1 as Grace Hall scored on an error.

The Eagles cut the margin to 7-3 with a pair of runs in the fourth and to 7-5 with two runs in the sixth.  Heather Grelle's RBI single scored Ashley Lindstrom and Meg Nelson's run-scoring single knocked in Grelle in the fourth.  Sydney Schemenauer hit a solo home run in the sixth and Nelson scored on a Simpson (Iowa) error to cut the lead to 7-5.

Caitlyn Hughes (5-2) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 0.1 of an inning, allowing four hits and four runs.  Grelle went 5.2 innings, allowing four hits, three runs (one earned) and three walks with five strikeouts.  The Eagles outhit the Storm, 15-8, in the opener.  All nine starters recorded a hit for UWL, including five players with multiple-hits.  Wiltzius finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Schemenauer and Nelson both went 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI.  Lindstrom and Sydney Murphy finished 2-for-4 with Lindstrom scoring once.

VanVlett (9-1) earned the win for Simpson (Iowa).  She pitched 5.1 innings, allowing 14 hits and five runs (four earned) with one strikeout.  Fisher picked up her third save, going 1.2 innings, allowing one hit.  Taylor Davis went 2-for-4 for the Storm with VanVleet finishing with three RBI and Fisher two.

In the nightcap, Simpson (Iowa) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  Haag walked, advanced to second on a Paige Lammers sacrifice bunt and scored on a Davis single.  Davis later scored on a Brianna Chaplin RBI single.

UWL cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of third as Alecia Faber knocked in Nelson with a run-scoring single before Simpson (Iowa) regained a two-run lead in the bottom of the frame on Rachel Guessford's solo home run.

The Storm scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth on five hits and one Eagles' error.  Simpson (Iowa) scored five runs in the inning on bases-loaded walks. VanVleet finished the scoring on a two-run single.

Jessie Carignan (4-2) took the loss for UWL, going 3.0 innings, allowing six hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out two.  Five different players had a hit for the Eagles.

Fisher (10-0) picked up the complete-game victory for Simpson (Iowa), pitching 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, one run and one walk with seven strikeouts.  The Storm totaled 11 hits with Chaplin finishing 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run.  Haag and Arianna Kim each had two hits while Davis finished with three runs and three RBI.

UWL returns to action Saturday, April 2 with a pair of games in Oskaloosa, Iowa.  The Eagles face Buena Vista University (Iowa) at 1 p.m. and the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at 3 p.m.
