Box Score 2 Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a pair of games Saturday at the Tucson Invitational Games, falling 6-0 to George Fox University (Ore.) before coming back to earn a 7-4 victory over nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.). The Eagles are now 9-4 on the season.
UWL was held to six hits in the loss to George Fox (Ore.). The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with Rachel LaRont scoring on an RBI single from Rebecca Pridmore. George Fox (Ore.) added five runs in the fourth inning on Pridmore's second run-scoring single of the game and Kayla Anderson's grand slam.
Megan Nelson (1-1) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned) with one strikeout.
Brittany Baldwin went 2-for-4 for the Eagles while
Emily Holldorf went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Abbie Bergerson (5-1) picked up the complete-game win for George Fox (Ore.), going 7.0 innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out one. Kat Hylton and Pridmore both went 2-for-3 with Pridmore finishing with two RBI.
UWL earned its second win over Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in as many days with the 7-4 victory Saturday. Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) entered the week ranked 20th on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll. UWL picked up a 2-1 victory Friday.
Both teams scored a run in the second inning Saturday as UWL's
Ashley Lindstrom hit a home run in the top of the frame and Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) scored on Hannah Heacox RBI single. The Eagles took a 5-1 lead in the third with four runs. Holldorf and
Alecia Faber each had run-scoring singles while
Emilie Wiltzius hit a two-run home run. The Golden Gusties cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third on Emily Webb's solo home run.
Holldorf's run-scoring single knocked in
Caitlyn Hughes in the top of the fourth to give UWL a 6-2 advantage. Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) cut the deficit to 6-4 with a a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on Webb's two-run two-out double. UWL finished the scoring in the fifth on
Sydney Schemenauer's RBI double.
Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) left two runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings and one in the seventh.
Jessie Carignan (4-1) earned the win for UWL, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing three hits with three strikeouts.
Katie Klein picked up her fifth save of the year, going 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three.
The Eagles finished with nine hits as Holldorf went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored and Lindstrom finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run.
Heacox suffered the loss for Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), pitching 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits, seven runs and four walks with three strikeouts. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run while Weber finished 3-for-3 with three RBI and one run.
UWL wraps up its spring trip with a pair of games Sunday, March 20. The Eagles face Midland University (Neb.) at 11 a.m. (Central) and Carleton College (Minn.) at 1 p.m. (Central).
