Box Score 2 Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a pair of wins Wednesday at the Tucson Invitational Games, winning 11-3 in six innings over Carleton College (Minn.) and 4-2 over the University of La Verne (Calif.). UWL improves to 6-3 on the season with the two victories. Carleton (Minn.) dropped to 3-2 while La Verne (Calif.) fell to 14-5.
Versus Carleton (Minn.), UWL scored six times in the bottom of the second.
Sydney Schemenauer got the scoring started with a two-run double knocking in
Brooke Baldwin and
Sydney Murphy.
Brittany Baldwin's RBI single scored
Caitlyn Hughes to make it 3-0. A
Emily Holldorf single knocked in Schemenauer while
Emilie Wiltzius' two-run double scored
Brittany Baldwin and Holldorf.
Brittany Baldwin's single in the bottom of the third made it 7-0 before Carleton (Minn.) scored in the top of the fourth on a Emily Boxrud single to make it 7-1. Hughes hit a solo home run in the fifth to give UWL a 8-1 lead.
The Knights scored twice in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 8-3 on a Molly Steinberg double and Boxrud groundout. The Eagles tallied three runs in the bottom of the sixth with RBI singles from Murphy and Hughes while
Erin Maletzke stole home for a run.
Hughes (2-0) earned the complete-game victory, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs with four strikeouts. UWL totaled 17 hits as
Brittany Baldwin, Murphy and Hughes each finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Murphy scored three times and Hughes twice. Wiltzius and Schemenauer also had two RBI.
Maddie Sherwood (2-1) took the loss for Carleton (Minn.), going 1.1 innings, allowing nine hits and six runs. Boxrud and Sam Kile were both 2-for-3 for the Knights with Boxrud recording two RBI.
Against La Verne, the Leopards took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a Melissa Garcia single before the Eagles tied the game in the top of third with
Brittany Baldwin scored on a Holldorf single. La Verne's (Calif.) Victoria Baltazar scored Rachel Ogata with a single to make it 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth. UWL scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.
Brooke Baldwin stole home to tie the game at 2-2 and
Kerrigan Koch's double scored Maletzke for a 3-2 lead. Murphy followed with an RBI single to knock in Koch.
Jessie Carignan (2-1) picked up the win for UWL, pitching 4.2 innings in relief. She allowed four hits, one run and one walk while striking out two.
Katie Klein earned up her third save of the season, retiring all three batters she faced in the seventh inning.
Megan Nelson started for the Eagles, going 1.1 innings, allowing two hits, one run and one walk. UWL had eight hits with Holldorf finishing 2-for-4.
Katherine Kibbe (7-4) suffered the loss for La Verne (Calif.), pitching a complete-game. She pitched 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) with four strikeouts. The Leopards finished with six hits as Kibbe went 2-for-2 with a run scored and Garcia 2-for-3 with an RBI.
UWL returns to action Friday, March 18 with a pair of games, facing Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at 9 a.m. (Central) and Crown College (Minn.) at 11 a.m. (Central).
