Box Score Dubuque, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 66-55 to the University of Dubuque (Iowa) Wednesday night in the Stoltz Sports Center. The Eagles drop to 5-4 on the season while the Spartans improve to 4-6.
UWL is now 3-4 all-time versus Dubuque (Iowa). The Spartans earned a 77-68 victory last season in La Crosse.
Dubuque (Iowa) started the game scoring the first five points, but UWL fought back in the first period and tied the game at 10-10 with 1:20 left on a pair of
Delaney Schoenenberger free throws. Her jumper with :03 remaining gave the Eagles a 12-10 lead after one quarter.
In the second quarter, UWL led by as many as five.
Sydney Kannel's jumper with 2:03 remaining in the half put the Eagles up 28-23, but the Spartans finished the quarter on a 7-0 run capped by an Allie Biermeier layup with :17 left to give Dubuque (Iowa) a 30-28 halftime lead.
UWL jumped to its biggest lead of the game opening the second half on a 10-2 run to lead 38-32 after a
Kimmy Johnson layup with 3:46 left in the third quarter. Dubuque (Iowa) ended the period on a 12-1 run and take a 44-39 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Eagles cut the lead to 44-43 on a
MaKenzie Miller layup with 8:46 to play when the Spartans used a 14-4 run to grab their biggest lead at 58-47 with 3:29 left. UWL got as close as five at 60-55 at the 1:48 mark, but Dubuque (Iowa) converted free throws down the stretch and earned the 66-57 victory.
UWL shot 30.5% from the field Wednesday, including 30.8% (eight-of-26) from three-point range, and 64.7% (11-of-17) at the free throw line. Kannel and
Elise DeNoyer led the Eagles with 12 points. Kannel set a career-high with her 12 points, finishing four-of-five from the field, including two-of-three from three-point range, and two-of-four at the line. DeNoyer recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and team-high 11 rebounds, also dishing out four assists. Miller had seven points, five rebounds, and four steals.
Dubuque (Iowa) shot 40.8% from the field, including 35.3% (six-of-17) from three-point range, and 83.3% (20-of-24) at the line. Emily Brinker scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Spartans. Abbey Meyer had five assists and three steals.
UWL returns to action Thursday, December 29 against sixth-ranked Washington University (Mo.) at 4 p.m. at the Wartburg College (Iowa) Tournament.
