Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 67-47 to Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Tuesday night at Mitchell Hall. The Eagles drop to 2-2 on the season while the Gusties improved to 4-0.
UWL dropped to 0-2 all-time versus Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.). The Gusties earned a 69-61 victory over the Eagles last season.
In the first quarter, the teams were tied at 9-9 when Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) went on a 7-0 run capped by a Kendall Thompson jumper to make it 16-9 with 4:23 remaining.
MaKenzie Miller had five points in the period for UWL, but the Eagles trailed 18-13 after one.
The Gusties went on another 7-0 run early in the second quarter and led 25-14 with 8:12 left after a pair of Mikayla Miller free throws. UWL's
Elise DeNoyer had a fast-break lay-up after a steal from
Alyssa Clemment to cut the lead to 33-21 with :12 left, but Miller hit a three-pointer for Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) with :04 left to give the Gusties its biggest lead of the game at halftime, 36-21.
The lead grew to as many as 21 points with 6:06 left in the third quarter before UWL ended the period on a 14-4 run to draw within 51-40. Miller had seven points in the quarter for UWL, including a jumper at the buzzer to make it 51-40.
In the fourth, UWL got as close as nine points at 51-42 with 9:22 left after a pair of free throws from DeNoyer, but Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) finished the game on a 15-5 run.
UWL shot 29.8% from the field, including 33.3% (four-of-12) from three-point range, and 53.6% (15-of-28) at the free throw line. Miller led the Eagles with 15 points and nine rebounds. DeNoyer had nine points and five rebounds, while
Sierra Watrud and
Annie Schumacher had two assists each.
Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) shot 42.1% from the field, including 22.2% (four-of-18) from three-point range, and 83.3% (15-of-18) at the free throw line. Miller had a career-high 34 points for the Gusties, also adding eight steals, five rebounds, and two assists. Miranda Rice added 12 points while Taylor Anderson led the team with eight rebounds.
UWL returns to action Saturday, November 26 hosting Simpson College (Iowa) in the opening game of the Holiday Inn Express Classic at 5 p.m.
