Box Score River Falls, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team extended its winning streak to five with a 8-0 victory at UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon. The Eagles, ranked 24th on this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top-25 Poll, improve to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Falcons drop to 4-7-1 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC.
With the win, UWL reaches its 10th double-digit win total in 26 years of the program and remains in a first-place tie with UW-Whitewater in the WIAC. The Eagles won a school record 13 games in 1994 and 1996. The eight goals Saturday are the most since finishing with nine in a victory (9-1) over Cornell College (Iowa) September 6, 2006.
UWL earned its eighth shutout of the season and fifth straight in Saturday's win. The eight shutouts are tied for fifth in single-season school history. UWL had a school record 10 shutouts in 1995 and 2011. The Eagles have allowed five goals in 12 games this season (0.42 goals against average).
The Eagles scored six first half goals Saturday, including three in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Haley Hartkemeyer recorded her third game-winning goal of the season at 5:21 assisted by
Hayley Stephens to give UWL a 1-0 lead.
Alex Cording followed at 9:19 with a goal assisted by
Maddie Granos to make it 2-0 and :34 later, Granos gave the Eagles a 3-0 advantage with an unassisted goal at 9:53.
Maya Schmitt made it 4-0 at 14:26 assisted by Granos before Granos scored her second goal of the game at 21:48 for a 5-0 advantage.
Mary Mansker earned the assist on Granos' second goal.
Cassie Handrick finished the first half scoring at 29:38 assisted by
Rachel Rogahn.
Cording notched her second goal of the game at 56:54 assisted by Harings to make it 7-0 before
Ashley Osmek finished the scoring at 71:20 assisted by Handrick.
UWL totaled 27 shots, including 13 on goal. Granos finished with two goals and two assists Saturday while Cording tallied two goals. Ten different players recorded a point.
Kennedy Brault earned the win for UWL, improving to 9-2 on the season, while recording one save.
Abbi Burke combined on the shutout with Brault, finishing with six saves.
UW-River Falls had eight shots, including seven on goal. Erica Cimochowski took the loss for the Falcons, dropping to 4-3-1. Haley Crosby recorded three saves and Amanda LaDue two for UW-River Falls.
UWL returns to action Friday, October 14 hosting UW-Eau Claire at 4 p.m.
