Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team earned a 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 28-30, 25-15) victory over UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall in a match-up of nationally-ranked teams. The Eagles, ranked 18th on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, improve to 16-3 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while the Titans, ranked 21st on the AVCA Poll, drops to 16-4 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC.
UWL rallied back in the opening set after trailing 13-9. The Eagles used a 7-0 run to take a 16-13 advantage. UWL raced out an 8-4 lead in the second set and later took a 14-8 advantage on a
Jill Entinger kill. UW-Oshkosh came back to cut the lead to 16-15, but UWL went on a 9-4 run to end the set.
UW-Oshkosh led 23-17 in the third set before UWL scored six consecutive points to force a 23-23 tie on an
Ashley Entinger kill. The set was tied at 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28 before the Titans scored the final two points on a pair of Shannon Herman kills.
The Eagles never trailed in the fourth set as they went on a 13-6 run to lead 19-11.
Jill Entinger and
Ashley Entinger led UWL with 19 kills each Wednesday night. The duo combined for 38 kills with seven errors in 69 attempts (.420 hitting percentage).
Jill Entinger hit .600 (19-1-30) in the match while
Ashley Entinger hit .333 (19-6-39).
Stephanie Henk finished with 16 kills for the Eagles while
Marisa Johnson had 10.
Madison Entinger recorded 60 assists as UWL hit .256 overall. The Eagles hit .395 (19-4-38) in the opening set and 3.17 (21-8-41) in the second.
Henk recorded a double-double with 16 digs, leading five players in double figures. Johnson,
Paige Schmidt and
Halle Barnabo each finished with 12 digs while
Madison Entinger also recorded a double-double with 11 digs.
UWL totaled 7.0 blocks with
Jill Entinger and
Ashley Entinger each recording four block assists.
"UW-Oshkosh has a very strong offense and we were able to contain it by serving aggressively," said UWL head coach
Lily Hallock. "That weakened their passing so they had less options on offense. On the other side our passers did a nice job, enabling Madison to effectively run our offense. It was highlighted by her sisters, Ashley and Jill. It's fun to see the three of them being so successful on the court together."
UWL had seven aces in the match.
Tina Elstner led UW-Oshkosh with 13 kills with Shannon Herman finishing with 10. Lexi Thiel recorded 31 assists as the Titans hit .185 for the match. Thiel led the team with 15 digs while Rachel Gardner finished with 14.
UW-Oshkosh had 10.0 blocks with Carly Lemke recording six block assists and one block solo.
UWL returns to action Saturday, October 8 at 10th-ranked UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m.
