Maya Schmitt scored two goals in Wednesday's victory.
Box Score Winona, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over Saint Mary's University (Minn.) Wednesday night at Ochrymowycz Field.  The Eagles, ranked fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) North Region, and receiving votes in the national poll, improve to 11-3 overall while the Cardinals drop to 2-11-1 on the season.

UWL has now won eight of the previous nine matches against Saint Mary's (Minn.) and leads the all-time series, 10-5-1.  The Eagles beat the Cardinals 1-0 last season at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.

UWL started the scoring at 9:36 with Alex Cording recording her team-high seventh goal of the season to make it 1-0.  Hayley Stephens added her third assist of the year on the play. Maya Schmitt scored her third goal of the season at 16:38 with an assist by Cording, her second of the year, to make it 2-0.

Schmitt added her second goal of the game and fourth this season to make it 3-0 at 70:39.  Natalie Herzog assisted on the goal, her second of the year.

"Maya Schmitt played very well tonight and scored two great goals," said UWL head coach Jason Murphy.  "I am happy she was able to find the back of the net, and I know she will continue to score more goals for us going forward."

The Cardinals got on the board at 78:48 on a goal from Maura Michener.  Marissa Dressely assisted on the play.

UWL finished with 18 shots in the match, including eight on goal.  The Eagles held the Cardinals to three shots, with just the one on goal from Michener.

Kennedy Brault picked up the victory for the Eagles to improve to 10-3 on the season, playing 71:13. Abbi Burke played the final 18:47 for UWL.

"I was pleased with how we bounced back from our last match (1-0 loss to UW-Eau Claire)," added Murphy.  "We were good in possession and creative with our movement, especially in the first half.  Saint Mary's was very organized and dangerous on the counter and we did a good job of dealing with that throughout the match.  Defensively we really held them in check for most of the night."

UWL returns to action Saturday, October 22 hosting UW-Whitewater at 1 p.m. in the Eagles' regular-season home finale. UW-Whitewater is ranked sixth in the NSCAA.
