La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team recorded its fourth straight shutout to start the season with a 4-0 win over Grinnell College (Iowa) Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season while the Pioneers drop to 0-3-1.
Kate Heiderscheit scored her second goal of the season.
UWL has outscored its four opponents, 22-0, this season. Along with the 4-0 victory over Grinnell (Iowa), UWL earned a 7-0 win over Carroll University (Wis.) on August 29, 6-0 over UW-Superior on September 2 and 5-0 over Lawrence University (Wis.) on September 5.
It marks the second time in the last three years UWL has started the season with four shutouts. The Eagles recorded four straight shutouts to start the 2023 season.
Amaya Thesing gave UWL a 1-0 lead in Saturday's win, scoring on a penalty kick at 6:44.
Katelyn Studebaker tallied a pair of goals to extend the lead to 3-0 at halftime. She scored her first goal at 32:15 of
Ella Opie's assist and followed with a goal at 41:34 on
Riley Veenendaal's assist.
UWL had 16 shots in the first half and seven corner kicks.
Kate Heiderscheit made it 4-0 for UWL at 70:20 on a
Logan Fritsch assist.
The Eagles finished with 26 shots, including 19 on goal. Heiderscheit led UWL with four shots while Thesing, Studebaker and
Catherine Arnold each had three. Heiderscheit, Thesing and Studebaker had three shots on goal. Fourteen players recorded a shot in the game.
UWL had all 13 of the game's corner kicks.
Erelyn Apel earned the win, recording two saves.
Erelyn Apel and
Robin Blair combined for shutout with Apel earning the victory, playing 59:23 with two saves. Blair played the final 30:37.
Grinnell (Iowa) recorded four shots with two goal. Peyton Dixon suffered the loss, registering 15 saves.
UWL returns to action Saturday, September 13 at Millikin University (Ill.) at 12 p.m.
