Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 31-33, 25-14) at second-ranked and city-rival Viterbo University (Wis.) Wednesday night in R.W. Beggs Sr. Gymnasium. The Eagles drop to 7-3 on the season while the V-Hawks improve to 11-0. Viterbo (Wis.) is ranked second in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Top-25 Poll.
The V-Hawks raced out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set Wednesday and the Eagles could get no closer than four at 11-7 after a
Jill Entinger kill. Viterbo (Wis.) used a 8-3 run to lead 19-10. Viterbo (Wis.) led 11-3 in the second set after a Sara Biermaier kill before UWL came back with a 11-2 run to take its first lead of the night at 14-13 after
Paige Schmidt's service ace. The V-Hawks scored seven of the next nine points to lead 20-16, but the Eagles cut the deficit to 21-20 on
Leah Putzier's kill. Viterbo (Wis.) finished the set winning four of the next five points.
Set three featured 18 ties before UWL took the final two points on a Putzier kill and Viterbo (Wis.) attack error. The V-Hawks led 9-7 in the fourth set before going on a 6-2 run to lead 15-9 and the Eagles could get no closer than five points the rest of the set.
UWL hit .076 for the match (44 kills, 31 errors, 170 attempts).
Jill Entinger led the Eagles with 13 kills while
Ashley Entinger finished with 10 and Putzier with nine.
Jaclyn Barrette recorded 33 assists and 14 digs for UWL while
Danica Johnson had a team-high 24 digs.
Viterbo (Wis.) hit .239 for the match (55-18-155). Natalie Geidel led the V-Hawks with 15 kills while Siera Skow finished with 12 and Emilee Wiersma 10. Amelia Grahn registered 39 assists and 11 digs with Jennifer Krentz finishing with a match-high 32 digs. Jess Jarde added 11 digs. Viterbo (Wis.) had 9.0 team blocks with Wiersma finishing with five block assists.
UWL returns to action Saturday, September 19 with a pair of matches in Decatur, Illinois. The Eagles face Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) at noon and Millikin University (Ill.) at 2 p.m.
