Baseball Team Extends Winning Streak to Ten with Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team, ranked 20th in the American Baseball Coaches Association Division III Top-25 Poll, won both games of a non-conference doubleheader with Edgewood College (Wis.) Sunday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Eagles took the opener, 13-5, before winning the nightcap, 10-9.  UW-L improved to 28-10 on the season as it extended its winning streak to 10 games.  Edgewood (Wis.) falls to 18-21 on the season.  UW-L now leads the all-time series, 4-0, with Edgewood (Wis.).

Jameson Lavery (2-1) earned the win in the opener Sunday, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing three runs, five hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Logan Mallek pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing two runs (one earned), two hits and two walks while striking out three. The combination of Sawyer Johnson and Nic Pierick pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Bridger Berrett (3-3) suffered the loss for Edgewood (Wis.), pitching 5.2 innings, allowing eight runs (five earned), 10 hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Zack Creekmore led-off the top of the fourth with a solo home run to give Edgewood (Wis.) a 1-0 lead.  UW-L grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a Bryce Barsness two-run triple down scoring Shane Adler and Travis Buxton-Verstegen.

The Eagles extended the lead to 4-1 in the fifth inning as Joel Zyhowski scored on an Edgewood (Wis.) Eagles' error and Justin Anderson added an RBI single to score Taylor Kohlwey.

Edgewood (Wis.) cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning on Nick Lehner's two-run home run, but UW-L responded with six runs, all coming with two outs, in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-3 lead.  Barsness scored on Zyhowski's RBI single to give UW-L a 5-3 lead.  Alex Cordova singled to shortstop and Zyhowski came around to score after advancing on the throw to first.  Kohlwey followed with an RBI double to score Cordova.  After a Edgewood (Wis.) pitching change, Anderson's single scored Kohlwey and Ben Morgan capped off the scoring with a two-run home run.

The Edgewood (Wis. )Eagles cut the lead to 10-4 run in the top of the seventh off an RBI groundout by Creekmore, but UW-L scored three times in the bottom of the seventh on Cordova's three-run home run.  Jeff Tucker scored on a Peter Hefty double in the top of the eighth for Edgewood (Wis.) to finish the scoring.

UW-L finished with 15 hits in the opener as Anderson and Morgan each finished 3-for-4 with two RBI.  Anderson scored one run while Morgan had two.  Cordova went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs while Zyhowski finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs.  Kohlwey scored twice.

Edgewood (Wis.) totaled nine hits as Creekmore finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs while Hefty went 2-for-3.

In the nightcap, UW-L took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Buxton-Verstegen walked with one out and scored on Zyhowski's two-run home run. Edgewood (Wis.) cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third on Andrew Lauritzen's solo home run, but Kohlwey and Anderson both scored on passed balls in the bottom of third to give UW-L a 4-1 lead.

Edgewood (Wis.) cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth on Lauritzen's single scoring Danny Appino.  The Eagles took a 6-4 lead with four runs in the fifth highlighted by Appino's go-ahead three-run home run.

UW-L tallied three runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to take a 10-6 lead.  After back-to-back walks with two outs in the fifth, Barsness extended his hitting streak to 15 games with an RBI single to knock in Morgan to cut Edgewood's (Wis.) lead to 6-5.  Buxton-Verstegen drew the third walk of the inning to load the bases and Zyhowski drew the fourth walk of the frame to plate Shane Adler to tie the game at 6-6.  Barsness gave the Eagles a 7-6 lead scoring on a wild pitch.

Morgan hit an RBI double in the sixth inning to make it 8-6. An RBI single from Barsness drove in Adler for a 9-6 lead and Morgan came around to score on the throw trying to get Barsness out at second.

Edgewood (Wis.) cut the lead to 10-8 in the top of the seventh as Carlos Herrera scored on a UW-L fielding error and Alex Fowler came in on Appino's fielder's choice.  The Eagles cut it to 10-9 in the top of the ninth inning. Hefty walked with two outs and and advanced to second on Brodie Engel's infield single.  Heafty scored on a UW-L fielding error to make it a one-run game and Pat Manning walked to load the bases, but Jameson Sadowske retired Lauritzen on a fly ball to center field to end the game.

Joe Miller (7-1) earned the win in the nightcap for UW-L, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing five runs and seven hits with one strikeout.  Ben Cejka started for the Eagles, going 3.0 innings, allowing five hits, one run and one walk while striking out three.  Jake Stern went 1.1 innings, allowing two hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks.  Sadowske picked up his ninth save of the season, going 2.2 innings, allowing two hits, one run (unearned) and two walks while striking out two.

Cejka moved into third in school history in career strikeouts (171).  He needs four strikeouts to move into second and 15 to become UW-L's career leader.  Andy Elskamp (1998-2000) currently ranks second with 174 while Tom Klawitter (1977-80) is the all-time leader with 185.

Sadowske's ninth save set a single-season school record, breaking the record of eight set by Cory Anderson in 1997.

Steve Gavin (4-2) suffered the loss for Edgewood (Wis.), pitching 5.2 innings, allowing 10 runs (eight earned), seven hits and eight walks with four strikeouts.

Edgewood (Wis.) outhit UW-L, 16-7, and didn't commit an error while UW-L finished with four. UW-L drew nine walks and scored three runs on passed balls and wild pitches.

Barsness went 2-for-4 with two RBI for UW-L while Kohlwey finished 2-for-5 with two runs. Morgan and Adler each scored twice while Zyhowski finished with three RBI.

Appino went 3-for-6 with two runs and four RBI for Edgewood (Wis.) while Lauritzen finished 2-for-5 with two RBI. Creekmore finished 3-for-5 while Fowler went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

UW-L returns to action Tuesday, May 5 hosting Saint Mary's University (Minn.) in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m. at Copeland Park.  Both games are scheduled for seven innings.
