Eagles Defeat Millikin University In Opening Game Of NCAA Regional; Plays Baldwin Wallace Saturday

Decatur, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team opened the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Regional with a 7-2 win over host Millikin University (Ill.) Friday afternoon.

  • NCAA Millikin Regional: Millikin University is the #2 seed in the regional while UW-La Crosse is the #3 seed. 
  • Up Next: UWL will now face top seed Baldwin Wallace Unviersity (Ohio) in the winners bracket on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Millikin University will face Wartburg College (Iowa) at 11 a.m. on Saturday in an elimination game. Baldwin Wallace defated Wartburg 9-3 in the the other half of the bracket on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Millikin would take an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Mick Niebrugge two-run single to left field. Niebrugge's single scored Leton Ivers who had singled to lead off the inning as well as Ty Cribbett who was hit by a pitch. 
  • The Eagles would get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning as Chris Calico doubled, went to third on Charley Rowan's ground out and scored on Luke Walton's ground ground out.
  • With one out in the fifth inning, Sam Viniard singled and went to third on Keegan Fleischman's double to right center. Then with two outs, AJ Levy singled which scored both Fleischman and Viniard to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. 
  • Emiliano Ramos would extend the Eagles lead to 5-2 with his team leading ninth home run of the season. The home run also brought Brady Burrill in to score who had singled earlier in the inning. 
  • With the Eagles still leading 5-2 heading into the eighth inning, Calico led off with a single and went to second on Rowan's sacrifice bunt. Then with two outs, Burrill reached on an error which scored Calico to put UWL up 6-2. 
  • The Eagles would add a run in the top of the ninth inning as Levy singled with two outs and scored on Calico's triple tp make it 7-2.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with seven runs on 10 hits and one walk.
  • Calico (3-for-5, 2 runs, RBI) and Ramos (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) led the Eagles offense on Friday.
  • Levy also drove in two runs for the Eagles as he finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. 
  • After giving up two runs in the first inning, Owen Deprez (9-1) settled in and pitched a solid seven innings to earn his ninth win of the season. He allowed just two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight. 
  • Austin Olla (S, 5) pitched the final 2.0 innings to earn his fifth save of the year as he allowed two hits and struck out three. 
  • The Big Blue finished with two runs on seven hits and three walks. 
  • Mick Niebrugge finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Big Blue offense. 
  • Caleb Akins (10-2) suffered the loss for Millikin as he allowed seven (five earned) on 10 hits and one walk while striking out four in 8.2 innings.
