Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team, ranked 20th by the American Baseball Coaches Association Division III Top-25 Poll, earned a sweep of its non-conference doubleheader with Hamline University (Minn.) Saturday night at Copeland Park. The Eagles won the opener, 6-2, and the nightcap, 12-5, to push their winning streak to eight games. Both games were seven innings. UW-L improves to 26-10 overall while the Pipers drop to 21-19.
It is the first two wins for UW-L in school history over Hamline (Minn.), who now leads the all-time series, 5-2.
Caleb Boushley (4-1) earned the win for UW-L in the opener, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing one run (unearned), six hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
Jameson Sadowske went 1.0 inning, allowing two hits and one run while
Shane Adler pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and one walk.
Shay Torgerson (4-3) suffered the loss for Hamline (Minn.), pitched 0.2 of inning, allowing three runs and three walks. The Pipers used six different pitchers in the game.
Hamline (Minn.) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off a Joe Setrum RBI double scoring Dan Moro. UW-L tied the game in the bottom of the third as
Alex Cordova singled with two outs and scored on
Taylor Kohlwey's triple. The Eagles took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth without the benefit of a hit as
Ben Morgan scored on a
Bryce Barsness groundout. Morgan walked to start the inning and went to third on a Pipers' throwing error after
Shane Adler's sacrifice bunt.
The Eagles extended their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on two hits and three walks. Cordova and Kohlwey drew back-to-back walks to open the inning. After a fielder's choice, Morgan drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Adler and Barsness followed with back-to-back two-run singles.
Hamline (Minn.) finished the scoring in the top of the sixth as Rick Tormey scored on a Tyler Summers infield single.
Three players had two hits in the opening game for UW-L as Cordova and Adler both went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Adler also had two RBI. Kohlwey finished 2-for-2 with a run scored, walk and RBI.
Hamline (Minn.) also had three players with two hits as Tormey and Summers each went 2-for-3 and Chris Zeller finished 2-for-4.
In the nightcap,
Troy Kenkel (3-1) earned the win for UW-L, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing two runs, six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Mike Hanker went 0.1 of an inning, allowing three runs on four walks.
Nic Pierick finished the game, pitching 0.2 of an inning, allowing one hit.
Nicholas Roessler (4-1) suffered the loss for Hamline (Minn.), pitching 4.1 innings, allowing 10 runs (five earned) on 10 hits with one strikeout. Zach Smith finished the game for the Pipers, going 1.2 innings, allowing two runs and two hits with three strikeouts.
Hamline (Minn.) took a 1-0 lead in top of the second inning off a Setrum solo home, but UW-L responded with six runs in the bottom half of the inning off five hits and two Pipers' errors to take a 6-1 lead.Â
Travis Buxton-Verstegen gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead with a two-run double to scoring
Seth Feldman and Barsness. Cordova hit an RBI double to knock in Buxton-Verstegen and Morgan's three-run home run capped off the scoring.
UW-L added six more runs on five hits and one Hamline (Minn.) error in the bottom of the fifth. Barsness doubled and came around to score on the Pipers' error. Three straight RBI doubles by
Joel Zyhowski, Cordova, and Kohlwey gave the Eagles a 10-1 lead.Â
Justin Anderson followed with an RBI triple and Morgan an RBI groundout to score Anderson.
Hamline (Minn) got one run back to cut it to 12-2 in the top of the sixth inning off a Summers' RBI single to score Tormey. The Pipers capitalized on four straight walks in the top of the seventh to cut it to 12-5.
Kohlwey went 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI while Cordova finished 2-for-4. Kohlwey and Cordova each had two doubles. Anderson finished 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI while Barsness went 2-for-3 with two runs. Morgan finished with four RBI while Buxton-Verstegen had two runs and two RBI. The Eagles had nine extra-base hits in the game.
Summers went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Setrum had two RBI for the Pipers.
UW-L returns to action Sunday, May 3 hosting Edgewood College (Wis.) in a non-conference doubleheader starting at noon.
