Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader sweep of UW-Superior Saturday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Eagles won the opener, 4-2, and the nightcap, 7-0. UW-L, ranked 24th on this week's American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Top-25 Poll, improve to 20-10 overall and 13-7 in the WIAC. It marks the fifth straight season the Eagles have won at least 20 games. UW-Superior drops to 5-26 overall and 1-15 in the conference.
UW-L has now won eight straight over UW-Superior and 13 of the last 15 meetings. The Eagles held the Yellowjackets to two runs and nine hits in Saturday's doubleheader.
All four of UW-L's runs in the opener came with two outs. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
Alex Cordova reached on a UW-Superior fielding error with one out and advanced to second on
Taylor Kohlwey's single. After a pop-out,
Ben Morgan delivered a two-run two-out double scoring Cordova and Kohlwey.
The Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Kohlwey had a bunt single with one out and advanced to second on a Yellowjackets' throwing error on the play. Morgan later walked with two outs and
Shane Adler's RBI single scored Kohlwey for a 3-0 lead.
UW-L made it 4-0 in the sixth as
Joel Zyhowski walked with one out and advanced to second on a
Eric Vatch sacrifice bunt. Zyhowski moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Cordova's single up the middle.
UW-Superior cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the eighth with a pair of runs. Derek Cagle singled to start the inning and went to third on Alex Petroski's double. A pair of RBI groundouts from Greg Pitts and Matt Vold scored Cagle and Petroski to make it 4-2. Alex Quinones doubled and Brady Flaherty single put runners on the corners with two outs for the Yellowjackets, but
Ben Cejka struck out Jordan Koepp to end the inning.
Cejka (5-1) picked up the win for UW-L, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and two walks while striking out seven. He did not allow a hit until Pitts' single with one out in the top of the sixth.
Jameson Sadowske earned his seventh save of the season in the opener, pitching 1.0 inning and retiring the side in order. His seven saves is now tied for second in single-season school history.
Cory Anderson recorded a school record eight saves in 1997.
Kohlwey finished 2-for-4 with two runs in the opener while
Travis Buxton-Verstegen went 2-for-4. Morgan had two RBI.
Damian Wiblin (1-5) suffered the loss for UW-Superior, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs (two earned) and five walks while striking out three. Five different players had a hit for the Yellowjackets.
In the nightcap, UW-L scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Kohlwey scored on Adler's fielder's choice for the first run of the game and
Justin Anderson came in on the play after a UW-Superior throwing error. Morgan made it 3-0 coming in on an RBI groundout from
Bryce Barsness.
The Eagles added to their lead with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Adler's two-out RBI single brought in Kohlwey in the third while Kohlwey delivered Zyhowski with a two-out single in the fourth. Barsness gave UW-L a 6-0 lead with a two-out solo home run in the fifth.
Kohlwey added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to score
Alex Brown to finish the scoring.
Joe Miller (5-1) earned the victory in the second game Saturday, pitching 7.0 shutout innings. He allowed four hits and one walk while striking out three.
Logan Mallek went 2.0 innings, allowing one walk with two strikeouts. It is UW-L's third shutout of the season.
Seven of nine starters had a hit for the Eagles in the nightcap. Kohlwey finished 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI while Cordova went 2-for-5 and Barsness 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Adler had two RBI.
Rich Vanden Branden (1-6) took the loss for UW-Superior, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs (four earned) and one walk with one strikeout. Four different players had a hit for the Yellowjackets.
UW-L returns to action Sunday, April 26 hosting UW-Superior in a doubleheader starting at noon.
