Box Score 2 Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team opened up Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play with a doubleheader sweep at UW-Oshkosh Thursday afternoon at Tiedemann Field. The Eagles, receiving votes on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, improve to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the WIAC while the Titans fall to 8-6 overall and 0-2 in the league.
UW-L snapped UW-Oshkosh's eight-game winning streak with the 6-3 victory in the opener Thursday.
Caleb Boushley and
Jameson Sadowske combined to hold the Titans to seven hits in the first game. Boushley (1-1) earned the victory, going 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and two walks while striking out three. Sadowske picked up his third save of the year, pitching 2.0 innings and retiring all six hitters he faced with three strikeouts.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.
Taylor Kohlwey singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He then moved to third on a Titans' throwing error on
Joel Zyhowski's fielder's choice.
Justin Anderson followed with an RBI groundout to score Kohlwey with the first run of the game. UW-Oshkosh came back in the bottom of third to tie the game after Noah Polcyn doubled and stole third with one out. He came into score on Logan Reckert's sacrifice fly.
Both teams scored a run in the fifth inning with UW-L's
Eric Vatch hitting a solo home run in the top of the inning John Eagan scoring on a Reckert double in the bottom half of the frame.
UW-L tallied three times, all with two outs, in the top of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.
Alex Cordova singled with two outs and scored on
Ben Morgan's RBI double to give the Eagles a 3-2 advantage.
Bryce Barsness followed with an RBI double to knock in Morgan and Barsness came in on a Vatch single to make it 5-2. UW-Oshkosh cut the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh on Eagan's RBI groundout to score Luke Gajewski, but UW-L came back in the top of the eighth with a run as Carter Hoffman scored on Zyhowskis' two-out single.
Zyhowski, Anderson and Vatch each had two hits for UW-L with Vatch finishing with two RBI.
Peter Jewell (2-1) took the loss for UW-Oshkosh, pitching 7.2 innings, allowing 11 hits, six runs (five earned) and one walk with five strikeouts. Reckert finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In the nightcap,
Troy Kenkel and Sadowske combined to limit UW-Oshkosh to four hits in UW-L's 3-1 victory. Kenkel (2-0) earned the win for the Eagles, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out nine. He did not allow a hit until Polcyn's single with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Sadowske picked up his fourth save of the season, and second of the doubleheader, going 1.0 inning, allowing one hit, one run and one walk with two strikeouts.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth with both runs coming with two outs.
Travis Buxton-Verstegen reached on a fielder's choice with two outs and advanced to second after Cordova drew a walk. Both runners then scored on Morgan's two-out double to make it 2-0.
UW-L added to its lead in the top of the eighth as Kohlwey scored on a wild pitch. UW-Oshkosh got on the board in the bottom of the ninth on Andy Brahier's two-out single scoring Eagan, but Sadowske struck out the potential tying run in Tyler Kozlowski to end the game.
Morgan finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for UW-L while four players had one hit.
Ben Messenger (1-2) suffered the loss for the Titans, going 7.1 innings, allowing six hits, three runs and two walks with eight strikeouts. Brahier went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
UW-L and UW-Oshkosh will play another doubleheader Friday, April 3 starting at noon at Tiedemann Field.
