Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a pair of wins over UW-River Falls Sunday afternoon at North Campus Field. UW-L, winners of seven straight, took the opener, 6-2, before winning the nightcap, 10-2 in six innings. The Eagles improve to 18-6 overall and 4-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Falcons fall to 15-13 overall and 2-4 in the conference. UW-L now leads the all-time series, 50-41, with UW-River Falls.
In game one,
Katie Klein earned the win (3-1) as she came in relief of
Megan Nelson. Nelson went 2.2 innings, allowing four hits, one run, two walks with one stikeout. Klein pitched the final 4.1 innings,allowing three hits, one run, and two walks with five strikeouts.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Toni Lubahn hit an RBI single up the middle that scored Brooke Lauritzen.
The Eagles took control of the game in the bottom of the third inning where they pushed four runs across to take a 4-1 advantage.
Kerrigan Koch and
Emily Holldorf started the inning with back-to-back singles and each scored on Nelson's double to left center field.
Jenny Gallagher reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a throwing error on the Falcon's catcher on the same play.
Alecia Faber scored on the play as well.
In the top of the sixth, UW-River Falls cut the lead to 4-2 when Abbie Morris doubled to lead-off the inning and later scored on a passed ball.
UW-L answered back in the bottom of the sixth with two runs to finish the scoring.
Emilie Wiltzius drew a bases-loaded walk to score
Brittany Baldwin and Faber added an RBI single up the middle to knock in Holldorf.
Faber went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Nelson finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Brooke Lauritzen (6-5) suffered the loss for the Falcons, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, four runs and two walks with one strikeout.
Jessie Carignan and
Heather Grelle combined for the victory in the nightcap. Grelle (3-1) earned the victory, throwing 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts. Carignan started for the Eagles, going 3.0 innings allowing five hits and two runs with two strikeouts.
The Eagles tallied six runs in the bottom of the first inning as 10 batters came to the plate.
Erin Maletzke led-off with a walk and was sacrificed over to second by Holldorf. Nelson hit an RBI single up the middle and scored on Wiltzius' double to left center field for a 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded,
Mary Kate Pryor drew a walk scoring
Brooke Baldwin and
Kelli Anderson was hit-by-pitch scoring Faber to make it 4-0.
Kendra Brown later scored on a passed ball and
Brittany Baldwin knocked in the final run of the inning on an RBI groundout scoring Pryor.
UW-River Falls cut the lead to 6-1 with a run in the top of the second on a UW-L error, but the Eagles pushed their lead to 8-1 with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second. Nelson scored on a Falcons' error followed by Faber's RBI single to score Wiltzius. UW-L extended the lead to 9-1 in the third after
Brittany Baldwin singled and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Falcons got one run back in the fourth when Shannon Borchardt singled up the middle with the bases loaded to make it 9-2. The Eagles scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on Brown's single through the left side scoring Wiltzius.
Wiltzius went 3-for-4 with two runs, one double and an RBI while Holldorf finished 2-for-3.
Lauritzen (6-6) took the loss for UW-River Falls in the nightcap, pitching 0.1 of an inning, allowing two hits, six runs and three walks.
UW-L returns to action Tuesday, April 14 hosting Luther College (Iowa) in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. at North Campus Field.
