Box Score 2 Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader split at UW-Whitewater Sunday afternoon at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium. The Warhawks, ranked first in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Poll, took the opener, 16-5 in seven innings, before the Eagles came back to win the nightcap, 11-7. UW-L is now 12-7 overall and 5-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Whitewater is 18-3 overall and 8-2 in the conference.
The teams split its four-game series after the Warhawks (7-5) and Eagles (6-3) each earned victories Saturday, April 11.
UW-Whitewater, also ranked third the on D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in Sunday's opener as Mike Mierow scored on Daytona Bryden's RBI single. The Warhawks added a pair of unearned runs in the third for a 3-0 advantage as Kyle Haen drew a bases-loaded walk and Adam Gregory scored on a wild pitch.
UW-L, receiving one vote on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll. tied the game in the top of the fourth with three runs on
Justin Anderson's two-run single and
Bryce Barsness' sacrifice fly. The Eagles took a 4-3 lead in the fifth as
Eric Vatch scored on
Alex Cordova's single, but the Warhawks tallied five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 8-4 lead. Gregory tied the game at 4-4 with a lead-off home run. Bryden's RBI double gave UW-Whitewater a 5-4 lead followed by Jordan Kuczynski's sacrifice fly to make it 6-4. Mikole Pierce's two-run double finished the scoring.
The Eagles cut the margin to 8-5 in the top of the sixth on
Ben Morgan's solo home run, but the Warhawks scored eight runs on seven hits in the bottom of the sixth. Dane Burman had a two-run double; Bryden a two-run home run and Steve Chamberlain a two-run double to highlight the inning.
Jake Stern (0-1) suffered the loss for UW-L, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing three hits, four runs and two walks while striking out two.
Troy Kenkel started for the Eagles, going 2.2 innings, allowing three hits, three runs (one earned) and four walks with four strikeouts.
Cordova and Morgan each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Cordova scored once and Morgan twice while Anderson finished with two RBI.
Luke Bachar (3-0) earned the win for UW-Whitewater, going 6.0 innings, allowing five hits, five runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out seven. Eight of nine starters had at least one hit and scored at least one run for the Warhawks as the team totaled 14 overall. Bryden finished 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI. Gregory, Mierow and Haen each had two hits while Chamberlain, Casey Power, Gregory, Mierow, Kahen, Burman and Bryden each scored twice.
In the nightcap, UW-Whitewater took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Bryden scored on a sacrifice fly from Pierce. UW-L tied it in the top of the second inning with Barsness scoring on an Anderson single. The Warhawks led 2-1 in the bottom of the second after Bryden's infield single and UW-Whitewater added a pair of runs in the fourth on a Chamberlain RBI double and UW-L error for a 4-1 lead.
UW-L took a 7-4 lead with six runs on six hits and one error in the top of the sixth inning. Morgan opened the frame with a single and scored on a Barsness triple to cut the lead to 4-2.
Travis Buxton-Verstegen's single scored Barsness to make it 4-3 and after a UW-Whitewater pitching change, Buxton-Verstegen scored on Vatch's sacrifice fly to tie the game.
Joel Zyhowski gave the Eagles a 5-4 advantage with a single scoring Anderson.
Taylor Kohlwey was hit-by-pitch with the bases-loaded to make it 6-4 and after the second pitching change of the inning, Zyhowski scored on a passed ball for a 7-4 lead.
The Eagles added to their lead in the top of the eighth as Cordova tripled and scored on a Kohlwey single. UW-L tallied three runs with two outs in the ninth to make it 11-4.
Nic Barnes hit a solo home run for a 9-4 advantage and after Vatch walked, Zyhowski's two-run home run made it 11-4. UW-Whitewater scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth, highlighted by Power's two-run home run.
Joe Miller (4-0) picked up the win for UW-L, going 7.0 innings, allowing 11 hits and four runs (three earned) with four strikeouts.
The Eagles finished with 16 hits in the nightcap, including at least one from all nine starters. Anderson finished 4-for-4 while Cordova, Barsness, Buxton-Verstegen and Zyhowski each went 2-for-5. Zyhowski had three RBI and Kohlwey two. Eight of nine starters scored a run for UW-L, including Barsness, Barnes and Zyhowski with two each.
Heath Renz (1-1) took the loss for UW-Whitewater, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing nine hits, five runs and one walk with five strikeouts. Bryden and Power each went 3-for-5 with Bryden scoring three runs and Power finishing with two RBI. Chamberlain and Kuczynski each had two hits.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, April 15 hosting UW-Stevens Point for three games starting at noon at Copeland Park. The first game will resume from Tuesday, April 7 with a scoreless contest in the bottom of the first. The game, which will be nine innings, was postponed April 7 due to lightning and rain. The teams will then play its regular scheduled doubleheader with the first game nine innings and the second contest seven innings.
