Box Score 2 Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader split at UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium. The Warhawks, ranked first in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Poll, took the opener, 7-5, before the Eagles came back to win the nightcap, 6-3. UW-L is now 11-6 overall and 4-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Whitewater is 17-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
UW-Whitewater, also ranked third the on D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, had its 15-game winning streak snapped with UW-L's victory in Saturday's nightcap. The loss was UW-Whitewater's first in regular season conference play since April 27, 2014 and also snapped the team's 16-game home win streak. UW-L is receiving one vote on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll.
In the opener, UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning as
Bryce Barsness drew a bases-loaded walk to score
Justin Anderson. UW-Whitewater scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-1 advantage. Kevin White's RBI single tied the game at 1-1 and Will Helbing's RBI groundout gave the Warhawks a 2-1 lead. Mikole Pierce, Adam Gregory and Mike Mierow each drew bases-loaded walks to make it 5-1.
UW-Whitewater added to its lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh as Pierce scored on a UW-L error. The Eagles cut the margin to 6-2 in the top of the eighth with
Joel Zyhowski driving in
Travis Buxton-Verstegen with an RBI single. The Warhawks got the run back in the bottom of the frame on Steve Chamberlain's sacrifice fly knocking in Kyle Haen.
UW-L rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth, all coming with two outs.
Ben Morgan and Anderson walked with two outs and came in on Buxton-Verstegen's two-run double to cut the lead to 7-4. Barsness followed with an RBI single to score Buxton-Verstegen to make it 7-5, but pinch-runner
Carter Hoffman was forced out a second on a fielder's choice to end the game.
Ben Cejka (3-1) suffered the loss for UW-L, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing four hits, five runs and five walks while striking out five. Buxton-Verstegen finished 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI while Anderson and Barsness each went 2-for-4. Anderson scored twice.
Curtis Morgan (4-0) earned the win for UW-Whitewater, going 6.1 innings, allowing six hits, one run and three walks with seven strikeouts. Mierow, Haen and White each had two hits for the Warhawks.
In the nightcap,
Caleb Boushley (2-1) earned the win for UW-L. He pitched 7.1 innings, allowing six hits, two runs and three walks while striking out fiv.
Jameson Sadowske picked up his fifth save of the year, going 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, one run (unearned) and one walk with three strikeouts.
Each team scored a run in the first inning.
Alex Cordova opened the game with a triple for UW-L and scored on
Taylor Kohlwey's RBI groundout. Chamberlain walked with one out for UW-Whitewater in the bottom of the frame and scored on Pierce's double.
The Eagles regained the lead in the top of the second with Anderson scoring on a
Nic Barnes' groundout before the Warhawks tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on Haen's single scoring Gregory.
UW-L tallied three times, all comign with two outs, in the top of the seventh for a 5-2 lead. Barnes singled with one out and Cordova later walked with two outs. Kohlwey followed with a three-run home run to make it 5-2. The Eagles added to their lead in the top of the eighth as
Eric Vatch scored on a Barnes' RBI double. UW-Whitewater finished the scoring on Chamberlain's single scoring White in the bottom of the ninth. The Warhawks had the tying run at the plate, but Sadowske struck out Pierce to end the game.
Barnes went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored while Kohlwey finished 2-for-5 with a run scored and four RBI.
Colin Grove (5-1) took the loss for UW-Whitewater, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs and two walks with six strikeouts. Chamberlain and Gregory each had two hits.
The teams will play another doubleheader Sunday, April 12 starting at noon.
