UW-L Defeats St. Joseph's-Brookyln; Falls to Central

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 7-0 victory over St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn (N.Y.) before falling 2-0 to 19th-ranked Central College (Iowa) Thursday.  The Eagles are now 11-5 on the season.

Versus St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (N.Y.), Jessie Carignan and Heather Grelle combined on a two-hit shutout.  Carignan earned the victory, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out seven.  Grelle started for the Eagles, going 3.0 innings, allowing one hit and two walks with two strikeouts.

UW-L scored twice in the bottom of the third inning Thursday.  Katrina O'Keefe tripled with one out and scored on a Emilie Wiltzius groundout.  Kelli Anderson followed with a two-out solo home run for 2-0 lead. 

The Eagles added four runs in the fifth inning. O'Keefe walked to start the inning and came in on Wiltzius' RBI triple to make it 3-0.  After Anderson walked and substituted for by pinch-runner Kayla Selz, Mary Kate Pryor's sacrifice fly knocked in Wiltzius.  Carignan followed with a two-run home run to score Selz.  Carignan finished the scoring with an RBI single to score Anderson in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Along with earning the pitching win, Carignan finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI.  Anderson went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI while Wiltzius finished with two RBI and O'Keefe had two runs.

In the third meeting between the teams this season, Central (Iowa) picked up a 2-0 win over UW-L Thursday.  The Dutch earned a 5-4 victory over the Eagles Mach 6 in Rochester, Minnesota while UW-L earned a 6-2 win March 15 in Tucson.

Central (Iowa), ranked 19th on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Abbey Strajack scored on a double steal.  Karlee Rock accounted for the only other run in the game on a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.

UW-L left the bases-loaded in the top of the sixth inning and left two runners on base in the seventh.

Megan Nelson suffered the loss for the Eagles, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs and one walk while striking out two. Emily Holldorf went 3-for-4 for UW-L.

UW-L returns to action Friday, March 20 with games in Tucson.  The Eagles face Pacific Lutheran University (Calif.) at 10 a.m. (Central) and the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at noon.  UW-L has won the previous two meetings with Dubuque (Iowa) this season, winning 7-2 on March 6 and 4-2 on March 7.  Both games were played in Rochester, Minnesota.
