Box Score 2 Winter Haven, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham (N.J.) Wednesday. The Eagles won the opener, 6-0, and the nightcap, 14-6. Both games were seven innings. UW-L improves to 4-1 on the season.
With the win in the opener, UW-L head coach
Chris Schwarz became the school's career leader in victories with 217. He earned career win 218 with the Eagles' victory in the nightcap. Schwarz, in his 11th season at UW-L, breaks
Pat Trokan's record of 216 victories. Trokan served as UW-L's head coach from 1981-95.
In Wednesday's opener,
Troy Kenkel (1-0) pitched the complete-game shutout. He went 7.0 innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts.
UW-L scored a run in the top of the second inning for a 1-0 lead.
Ben Morgan singled to start the inning and advanced to third on
Travis Buxton-Verstegen's double. Morgan then scored on
Alex Cordova's sacrifice fly. The Eagles added a run in the third.
Joel Zyhowski was hit-by-pitch to start the frame and went to third on
Michael Knutson's double.
Taylor Kohlwey's sacrifice fly drove in Zyhowski for a 2-0 lead.
UW-L added four runs in the fifth inning. Buxton-Verstegen's RBI double scored
Justin Anderson followed by a two-run triple from Cordova bringing in Morgan and Buxton-Verstegen.
Bryce Barsness' single drove in Cordova to make it 6-0.
Seven starters had at least one hit for the Eagles, including three players with two hits. Morgan finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Buxton-Verstegen went 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI and Barsness finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Cordova had three RBI.
In the nightcap, UW-L recorded 19 hits in earning the 14-6 win. The Eagles scored five times in the bottom of the first on five hits. Buxton-Verstegen had a run-scoring single to get the scoring started while
Alex Brown's three-run triple made it 4-0. A
Eric Vatch single finished the scoring.
UW-L took a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Cordova's two-run double. FDU-Florham (N.J.) cut the lead to 7-2 with a pair of runs in the third inning on Frankie Tassielli's sacrifice fly and James Dertouzos' RBI single. UW-L responded in the bottom of third with two runs of its own on a Anderson RBI single and FDU-Florham (N.J.) error for a 9-2 lead.
The Devils made it 9-6 with four runs in the top of the fourth. Sam Coutoufos walked with the bases-loaded while Dylan DiPolvere had a two-run double and Alex Geramita added an RBI single. The Eagles responded again in the bottom of the inning coming back to score four times to take a 13-6 advantage. Barsness had a run-scoring triple and Brown an RBI single while Brown scored on a FDU-Florham (N.J.) error. Kohlwey added an RBI groundout. UW-L finished the scoring in the fifth inning on Vatch's RBI single.
Logan Mallek (1-0) picked up the win, going 3.0 innings in relief. He allowed two hits while striking out three.
Every starter had at least one hit for UW-L in Wednesday's nightcap, including eight players with at least two hits. Anderson finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Vatch finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Brown had four RBI while Barsness scored three times.
UW-L returns to action Friday, March 20 with a doubleheader versus Ramapo College (N.J.). Game one starts at 9 a.m. (Central) in Winter Haven, Florida.
