Box Score 2 Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team remained undefeated on its spring trip to the Tucson Invitational Games with a 9-0 win in five innings over Edgewood College (Wis.) and a 5-4 victory over the University of Puget Sound (Wash.) Tuesday. The Eagles improve to 10-4 on the season and 6-0 in the Tucson Invitational Games.
Versus Edgewood (Wis.),
Megan Nelson and
Jessie Carignan earned the shutout victory. Nelson picked up the win, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing two hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Carignan went 1.0 inning.
UW-L tallied four runs in the top of the second inning on five hits.
Kerrigan Koch got the scoring started with a two-run single knocking in
Kelli Anderson and
Lane Dickman.
Emily Holldorf followed with an RBI single to score
Brittany Baldwin for a 3-0 lead. Koch later scored on Nelson's fielder's choice.
The Eagles added five runs on five hits in the fourth inning. Holldorf scored on
Emilie Wiltzius' single for a 5-0 advantage. Nelson scored on
Alecia Faber's groundout while
Brooke Baldwin scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-0. Dickman had a run-scoring groundout and
Brittany Baldwin an RBI single to finish the scoring.
UW-L finished with 11 hits in the win as Holldorf went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Katrina O'Keefe finished 2-for-3 with a run scored while Wiltzius went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Anderson scored twice.
In its victory over Puget Sound (Wash.), UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning without the benefit of a hit. Wiltzius advanced to third on a error to open the frame and scored as
Greta Gumness reached on another Puget Sound (Wash.) error. The Eagles made it 4-0 with three runs in the top of the third, recording one hit while the Loggers committed two errors.
Brittany Baldwin scored on Holldorf's sacrifice bunt for a 2-0 advantage and Wiltzius added a two-run home run to make it 4-0.
Puget Sound (Wash.) came right back in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 4-4. Erica Gott's two-run single cut the margin to 4-2 and she later scored with Lisa Colombo on a UW-L error.
The Eagles regained the lead in the top of the sixth with what become the eventual game-winning run. Faber walked to start the inning. After a pair of outs, Dickman doubled to move Faber to third.
Brittany Baldwin then knocked in Faber on an infield single to give UW-L a 5-4 lead.
The Loggers had two runners on base with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but the Eagles'
Katie Klein recorde a pair of strikeouts to end the game.
Klein earned the win, pitching 4.0 innings in relief. She allowd one hit and two walks while striking out seven.
Heather Grelle started, going 3.0 innings, allowing five hits and four runs (two earned) with one strikeout.
Six different players had a hit for the Eagles. Wiltzius had two RBI and scored twice.
UW-L returns to action Thursday, March 19 with two games. The Eagles face St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn (N.Y.) at 11 a.m. (Central) and Central College (Iowa) at 1 p.m.
