Softball Team Earns First Wins of Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Rochester, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned its first two wins of the 2015 season Sunday night in the Rochester Regional Stadium and Bubble Dome at Rochester Community and Technical College.  The Eagles earned a 7-1 victory over Millikin University (Ill.) and 7-5 over Hamline University (Minn.).  UW-L is now 2-2 on the season.  Millikin (Ill.) drops to 0-4 on the season while Hamline (Minn.) is 1-3.

Versus Millikin (Ill.), Megan Nelson earned the complete-game victory.  She went 7.0 innings, allowing four hits, one run and one walk while striking out eight.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a solo home run from Emilie Wiltzius.  UW-L added three runs in the third to take a 4-0 advantage.  Brittany Baldwin had a bunt single with one out and moved to second on Emily Holldorf's walk.  Nelson was hit-by-pitch to load the bases and all three runners scored on a Wiltzius double.

Holldorf's infield single scored Katrina O'Keefe in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-0 Eagles' lead.  The Eagles tallied two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Wiltzius walked to lead-off the frame and went to third on Alecia Faber's single.  Jenny Gallagher's RBI single scored Wiltzius and Kelli Anderson followed with another run-scoring single to knock in Faber. 

Millikin (Ill.) got its only run of the game in the top of the seventh with a Erica Forbes sacrifice fly to score Becca Thompson.

UW-L finished with nine hits in the game as Holldorf, Wiltzius and Faber each went 2-for-3.  Wiltzius scored twice and had four RBI.

In the win over Hamline (Minn.), the Pipers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with Mary-Clare Couillard scoring on a Casey Anderson single.  The Eagles tallied twice in the top of the second to take their first lead of the game.  Wiltzius doubled to start the inning and Faber later reached on an error.  Both runners scored on Anderson's two-out double to make it 2-1.   Hamline (Minn.) came back in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs to lead 3-2 on RBI singles from Amanda Orrell and Anderson.

UW-L rallied in the top of the fifth scoring four runs to take a 6-3 lead.  Kerrigan Koch homered to start the inning and tie the game at 3-3.  Holldorf reached on a bunt single with one out and scored on Wiltzius' two-run two-out home run to give UW-L a 5-3 advantage.  Mary Kate Pryor followed with single and scored on Faber's double.  Baldwin added an RBI fielder's choice in the top of the sixth to knock in Katie Nachitgal with an earned run and make it 7-3.

Hamline (Minn.) cut the lead to 7-5 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Sarah DeMars scored on an RBI groundout by Jamie Rubbelke and Kelsey McWilliams scored on a passed ball.  The Pipers put the game-tying runs on base in the bottom of the seventh, but DeMars struck out to end the game.

Jessie Carignan earned the win for UW-L, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing six hits, three runs and two walks with one strikeout.  Katie Klein pitched 2.0 innings for the Eagles, allowing three hits and two unearned runs while striking out one.

UW-L had 11 hits in the game.  Koch finished 3-for-4 with a home run while Wiltzius was 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, one double and one home run.  Pryor went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

UW-L returns to action Friday, March 6 at the RCTC Dome.  The Eagles face Central College (Iowa) at 7 p.m. and the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at 9:30 p.m.
