Box Score 2 Rochester, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to open its 2015 season Saturday in the Rochester Regional Stadium and Bubble Dome at Rochester Community and Technical College. The Eagles fell 4-3 to Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) and 7-2 to Coe College (Iowa).
The Eagles trailed 2-0 after Sarah Rozell hit a two-run home run in the top of the second inning. Carly Klass hit a solo home run in the third and fifth innings to give the Gusties a 4-0 advantage.
UW-L's
Jenny Gallagher led the bottom of the seventh off with a double to get a rally started. The double was followed by two singles by
Brittany Baldwin and
Emily Holldorf to load the bases. After a
Megan Nelson strikeout, Gallagher scored on
Emilie Wiltzius' fielder's choice to cut the Gusties lead to 4-1. After a Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) fielding error moved Holldorf to third and Wiltzius to second,
Kelli Anderson reached on a throwing error that plated Wiltzius and Holldorf to make it 4-3.
Greta Gumness walked, but
Kerrigan Koch struck out looking to end the game with runners on first and second.
Megan Nelson (0-1) was credited with the loss. She went 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, four runs, and one walk while striking out three.
Katie Klein pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in relief, allowing no hits and four walks with one strikeout.
UW-L outhit Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) 10-5 in the contest as Baldwin and Holldorf each went 2-for-4. Gallagher's double was the only extra base hit for the Eagles.
In the loss to Coe (Iowa), the Kohawks opened the bottom of the first inning with two runs to jump out to an early lead. Brianna Gardner singled up the middle to score Erin Lang and Anna Corkery followed with an RBI single to right field scoring Gardner. Paige Zahner extended the Kohawks' lead to 3-0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.
The Eagles cut the lead to 4-2 scoring one run in each the third and fourth innings. Holldorf singled to score
Mary Kate Pryor in the third and Wiltzius hit solo home run in the fourth.
Coe (Iowa) scored four runs in the sixth inning on a Zahner two-run home run and Maliah Fligg two-run single.
Jessie Carignan (0-1) took the loss for UW-L. She pitched 5.0 innings, giving up nine hits, three runs (two earned), and one walk while striking out two.
Heather Grelle pitched 1.0 inning, allowing four runs on six hits.
UW-L had three hits while the Kohawks finished with 15. Holldorf and Wiltzius went 1-for-3 for Eagles while Pryor finished 1-for-2.
UW-L returns to action Friday, March 1 at the RCTC Dome. The Eagles face Millikin University (Ill.) at 4:30 p.m. and Hamline University (Minn.) at 7 p.m.
