Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Saint Mary's University (Minn.) Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 10-3 overall while the Cardinals drop to 3-8 on the season.
UWL has now won seven of the previous eight matches against Saint Mary's (Minn.) and leads the all-time series 9-5-1. The Cardinals beat the Eagles 1-0 last season in double overtime.
UWL runs its winning streak to six straight matches with Wednesday's victory, one win shy of tying the school record of seven consecutive wins. The Eagles won seven straight matches in 1994 and 1999.
The Eagles tallied the only goal of the match Wednesday at 7:55 with
Alex Cording scoring her fourth goal of the season.
Heather Willems recorded her first assist of the year.
"Alex played really strong and was a nice target for us," said UWL Head Coach
Jason Murphy. "
Cassie Handrick has really played well the last couple of games, and our back four was organized and good throughout the game."
UWL finished with 13 shots in the match, including seven on goal. Saint Mary's (Minn.) finished with nine shots, including three on goal.
Kennedy Brault earned the shutout in goal for the Eagles, registering three saves. Aubrie Cornell finished with six saves for the Cardinals.
UWL had two corner kicks, one in each half, while St. Mary's (Minn.) had none.
"We were able to get a lot of players through the game, were able to try some different things with our shape, and still were able to win. So from that perspective it was a good game for us," added Murphy.
UWL returns to action Saturday, October 10 hosting UW-Stout at 5 p.m.
