Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team fell 3-2 in overtime to UW-Stevens Point Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The loss was the first for the Eagles in WIAC play this season, dropping them to 12-5-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference. The Pointers improve to 4-14 overall and 2-4 in WIAC play.
The Eagles, ranked fifth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NCSSA) North Region Rankings, will host fourth ranked UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, with the winner claiming the WIAC regular season title and the top seed for the WIAC tournament.
UW-Stevens Point opened the scoring on Olivia Bohnert's second goal of the season at 26:39, and led 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, UWL drew even at 1-1 when
Alex Cording scored her sixth goal of the year at 51:17.
The Pointers answered with a Sarah Meylor goal at 56:47 to lead 2-1.
UWL's
Natalie Herzog scored her fourth goal of the year at 74:42 to tie the game at 2-2, and the score remained tied at the end of regulation.
In overtime, UWL had the first chance at victory, but Kristen Churkey saved a Cording shot on goal at 91:56. UW-Stevens Point ended the game at 95:51 with a Jillian Ross goal.
UWL finished with 21 shots, including nine on goal. Cording totaled eight shots, including five on goal. Her six goals on the season is tied for the most on the team.
Kourtni Alcock added three shots.
UW-Stevens Point totaled nine shots, including seven on goal. Meylor, Bohnert, and Kayla Huber had two shots each in the match.
The Eagles'
Kennedy Brault registered four saves in the loss. Churkey had seven saves for the Pointers.
UW-Stevens Point now leads the all-time series 25-3-4. The teams battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie in Stevens Point last season.
UWL wraps up its regular season hosting UW-Oshkosh Saturday, October 31 at 1 p.m.
