UWL Wins Eighth Straight; Earns Victory at Nationally-Ranked UW-Whitewater

Maya Schmitt scored her first goal of the season Saturday night.
Box Score Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team earned a 1-0 overtime victory at 14th-ranked UW-Whitewater Saturday night.  The Eagles improve to 12-3 overall and 5-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Warhawks drop to 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference. UWL is 5-0 in the WIAC for the first time in school history. The Eagles set a single-season school record with their eighth straight win Saturday, breaking the record of seven consecutive set in 1994 and 1999.

It is UWL's first win over UW-Whitewater since 2005.  The Warhawks were 7-0-2 in the last nine meetings between the two teams.

UWL has earned five shutouts in its eight-match winning streak, including four straight 1-0 victories.  The Eagles improved to 7-1 on the road this year.

UW-Whitewater is ranked 14th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top-25 Poll.  UW-Whitewater is ranked first in the NSCAA North Region while UWL is sixth.

"We knew going into the match that if we played our style we could be in the match," said UWL head coach Jason Murphy.  "I have to give credit to UW-Whitewater.  They are a great team.  I think it was a great day for WIAC soccer and the fans had a great match to enjoy."

Maya Schmitt scored the only goal of Saturday's match at 94:12 assisted by Natalie Herzog.  It was Schmitt's first goal of the season.

"Maya was great all night," said Murphy.  "She was keeping the ball with Alex Cording up top for us.  It was a just a great finish after UW-Whitewater came out strong to start overtime.  Maya started the year so well and then got hurt, but she has worked hard to get healthy.  Hopefully tonight got her started as a goal scorer."  UW-Whitewater started overtime with four shots in the first three minutes.

UWL finished with 12 shots, including six on goal.  Alex Cording led the Eagles with three shots (two on goal).  Schmitt (two on goal), Margaret Harings (one) and Hayley Stephens (one) each finished with two shots.  UW-Whitewater totaled 22 shots with four on goal.  Brianna Reid recorded six shots and Karina Rosales five for the Warhawks.  Each player had one shot on goal.

Kennedy Brault registered four saves for the Eagles, recording her fifth shutout of the season.  Erin Doody finished with five saves for the Warhawks.

"We are playing very well defensively with all 11 players doing their part," added Murphy. "To win four straight 1-0 matches is impressive for this young group.  Our leadership and commitment from everyone tonight was needed.  Our bench was focused, energetic, and encouraging.  It was a great win for UWL soccer."

UWL returns to action Wednesday, October 21 at St. Catherine University (Minn.) at 3:30 p.m.
