Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team extended its winning streak to seven with a 1-0 victory over UW-Stout Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils fall to 6-5-2 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
With the win, UWL ties the school record with seven consecutive victories set in 1994 and 1999. The Eagles improve to 4-0 in the WIAC for the first time since 1999. UWL went on to finish 6-2 in the WIAC in 1999 and advanced to the league's tournament championship match.
"We're pretty excited to be 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference," said UWL head coach
Jason Murphy. "We have some really big matches left in the conference, starting at UW-Whitewater next week. Records are nice and exciting for our players, but we have to continue to play well day in and day out with our training."
Margaret Harings scored her team-leading sixth goal Saturday at 40:21, assisted by
Maya Schmitt and
Maggie Edmark. "It was nice to be able to get Margaret free in the first half," said Murphy. "She was so composed and collected at the top of the box when she got the ball. Really impressed with her play."
UWL finished with 12 shots, including three on goal. Harings totaled five shots, including two on goal.
Natalie Herzog had two shots.
UW-Stout totaled 10 shots with three on goal. Sarah Todey, Sydney Kasper and Christina Block each had two shots in the match. The Blue Devils had nine shots in the second half after totaling one in the first half.
The Eagles'
Kennedy Brault registered three saves in recording her fifth shutout of the season. UWL, ninth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) North Region Rankings, recorded its sixth of the season Saturday, including third straight. The Eagles have allowed 11 goals in 14 matches.
"Defensively, we've been pretty organized over the last few weeks," said Murphy. "
Mary Mansker has really stepped up for us.
Nicole Blaser played on the back row tonight and we're excited we have the depth on the back. We do a good job defensively in dictating the play and
Kennedy Brault has really played well for us."
Paige Meyer finished with two saves for UW-Stout Saturday night.
"The sky is the limit for this team," said Murphy. "This team has the potential to play with anybody on any given day. We're young, but our leadership has been fantastic."
UWL returns to action Saturday, October 17 at UW-Whitewater at 5 p.m. UW-Whitewater is ranked first in the NSCAA North Region and 16th in the NSCAA National Poll.
