Box Score Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned a 51-41 victory at UW-Stevens Point Wednesday night in Berg Gym. The Eagles improve to 8-11 overall and 3-7 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers fall to 9-10 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
The win is UW-L's first at UW-Stevens Point since the 2000 season, and the first season sweep over the Pointers since the 1988-89 campaign. The Eagles earned a 59-54 victory over the Pointers January 14 at UW-L.
UW-Stevens Point led by as many as six points in the first half at 17-11 with 5:45 remaining, but UW-L battled back with a 7-0 run to take the lead 18-17 with 3:53 left after a pair of free throws from
Cameron Chapin. The Eagles built their lead to five at 25-20 with :26 remaining after
Rachel Atchison hit two free throws, but a three-pointer by Sarah Gamillo on the ensuing possession got the Pointers within two at the half at 25-23.
UW-L went on a 9-0 run to start the second half, and led 34-23 after another pair of Atchison free throws with 17:30 left to play. The Pointers got as close as 38-35 at the 5:30 mark after a Kaitlyn Jacobs layup, but three-point field goals on consecutive possessions by
Elise DeNoyer and Atchison put the Eagles back up by 48-37 with 1:35 remaining. UW-Stevens Point could get no closer than eight points the rest of the game.
UW-L shot 34.2% from the field, including 37.5% (three-of-eight) from three-point range, and 66.7% (22-of-33) at the free throw line. Atchison led the Eagles with 14 points, with
MaKenzie Miller adding 13 and five rebounds.
Maggi Bishop had a team-high with seven rebounds while DeNoyer added six.
Jenna Anderson led the Eagles with four assists.
UW-Stevens Point shot 23.3% from the field, including 20.0% (four-of-20) from three-point range, and 68.8% (11-of-16) at the line. Lauren Anklam and Jacobs had 11 points each for the Pointers with Allie Miceli adding eight rebounds.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, January 31 hosting UW-Whitewater at 3 p.m. at Mitchell Hall.
