Softball Team Splits Doubleheader at Gustavus Adolphus

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. Peter, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Tuesday afternoon at Hollingsworth Field.  The Eagles won the opener, 3-2, while the Gusties took the nightcap, 1-0.  UW-L is now 16-4 on the season while Gustavus Adolphus is 11-9.  It was the third meeting between the teams this season after Gustavus Adolphus earned a 4-1 victory March 21 in Tucson, Arizona.

In Tuesday's opener, UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.  Katrina O'Keefe led-off with an infield single and advanced to second on Emily Holldorf's sacrifice bunt.  Alecia Faber then singled to score O'Keefe.  Gustavus Adolphus tied the contest in the bottom of the inning as Sarah Rozell scored on a UW-L error.

The Gusties took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with Ali Hoffman scoring on Kailey Morgan's groundout.  The Eagles scored twice in the top of the seventh to earn the victory.  Holldorf walked to start the inning followed by a Faber single.  Both runners then scored as Katie Fink reached on a Gusties' throwing error.

Jessie Carignan (5-0) earned the win for UW-L, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs and one walk with one strikeout. Faber, O'Keefe and Megan Nelson each finished 2-for-3.

Sarah Rozell (5-4) took the loss for Gustavus Adolphus, going 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and five walks while striking out three.  Lydia Wagner went 2-for-3.

Gustavus Adolphus scored the only run of the second game in the bottom of the third. Paige Breneman singled with one out and advanced to second on Shelby Nosan's single.  Both runners moved up a base on a UW-L error to load the bases.  Kaitlyn Bicek's single scored Breneman with the only run of the game.

Nelson (6-4) suffered the loss for UW-L, going 6.0 innings, allowing four hits, one run and two walks with four strikeouts.  Holldorf, Faber and Lindsey Sheehan each had one hit for the Eagles.

Hannah Heacox (3-1) picked up the victory for Gustavus Adolphus, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts.  Four different players had a hit for the Gusties.

UW-L returns to action Thursday, April 10 hosting UW-Whitewater starting at 3 p.m. at North Campus Field.  The Warhawks are currently receiving votes on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Top-25 Poll.
