Box Score 2 Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point Wednesday afternoon at McCarty Memorial Field. The Eagles won the opener, 10-7, before the Pointers came back to win the nightcap, 9-1 in five innings. UW-L is now 19-9 overall and 7-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Stevens Point is 11-20 overall and 2-12 in the conference.
In the opener, UW-L scored three times in the top of the second inning.
Emilie Wiltzius gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead with an RBI single knocking in
Lindsey Sheehan. Wiltzius then scored on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0 and
Alecia Faber's single scored
Megan Nelson for a 3-0 advantage. UW-Stevens Point scored twice in the bottom of the second on RBI singles from Samantha Olson and Paige Meulemans.
The Eagles scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-2 lead. Wiltzius had an RBI single in the third inning and a solo home run in the fifth.
Katie Fink had an RBI groundout in the top of the fourth inning.
The Pointers cut the lead to 6-4 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on Breanna Ellison's sacrifice fly and Abbey Zortman's RBI single.
UW-L added three runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted two Sheehan's two-run home run. Fink had a sacrifice bunt for an RBI. UW-Stevens Point finished the scoring on a three-run home run from Meulemans.
Jessie Carignan (6-2) earned the win for UW-L, pitching 4.0 innings in relief. She allowed nine hits, five runs and two walks while striking out four. Nelson started, going 3.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs and one walk with two strikeouts. Wiltzius finished 4-for-4 with two runs and three RBI while Fink had three RBI and a run scored. Sheehan went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Ashley Rothmund (1-5) suffered the loss for UW-Stevens Point, going 3.0 innings, allowing five hits, four runs (two earned) and one walk with one strikeout. Meulemans went 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored.
In the nightcap, UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as
Erin Maletzke scored on Sheehan's single. UW-Stevens Point then scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Meulemans tied the game on an RBI single while Bekah Rennicke's fielder's choice gave the Pointers a 2-1 lead. Zortman's two-run double made it 4-1 and UW-Stevens Point added its fifth run on a UW-L throwing error.
UW-Stevens Point took a 6-1 lead with a run in the bottom of third on Schreiner's sacrifice fly. The Pointers ended the game in the bottom of the fifth on a Schreiner RBI single and two-run double from Ellison.
Heather Grelle (6-3) took the loss for UW-L, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing six hits, six runs (three earned) and one walk. Maletzke went 2-for-3 with a run scored while
Kallie Krech finished 2-for-2.
Miranda Morrison (5-8) earned the victory for UW-Stevens Point, going 5.0 innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out two. Eight of nine starters had a hit for the Pointers. Meulemans and Zortman each went 2-for-3 with two run scored. Zortman, Schreiner and Ellison each had two RBI while Meulemans and Rennicke finished with one.
UW-L returns to action Thursday, April 24 hosting the University of Dubuque (Iowa) starting at 3 p.m. at North Campus Field.
