Box Score 2 Northfield, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader at St. Olaf College (Minn.) Monday afternoon at Mark Almli Field at Carlander Stadium. The Oles took the opener, 10-9, while the Eagles won the nightcap, 15-9. Both games were seven innings. UW-L is now 12-13 on the season while St. Olaf is 18-14.

Chris Schwarz earned his 200th career victory at the helm of the Eagles. He is now 200-186-1 in his 10th year at UW-L. Schwarz, selected the 2012 Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Coach of the Year as well as the D3baseball.com Midwest Region Coach of the Year, now ranks second in school history in victories. He passes
Bill Terry (1969-79) who now ranks third with 199 wins.
Pat Trokan (1981-95) is the all-time leader with 216 victories.
Schwarz also earned the WIAC and WBCA Coach of the Year honors in 2006.
In Monday's opener, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on
Cole Cefalu's one-out home run. The Oles scored twice in the bottom of the first on Chris Paradise's two-out two-run double. Both runs were unearned.
UW-L scored twice in the top of the fourth to regain a 3-2 lead. Cefalu singled to start the inning and scored on
Alex Cordova's double to tie the game.
Travis Buxton-Verstegen then singled home Cordova to give the Eagles a 3-2 advantage. St. Olaf tallied four times in the bottom of the fifth to lead 6-3. A two-run double from Tim Maus made it 4-3 while Paradise had an RBI double to give the Oles a 5-3 lead. Jake Mathison later added a two-out run-scoring single.
Buxton-Verstegen cut the lead to 6-4 with a solo home run in the top of the sixth. The Eagles then scored five times in the top of the seventh to take a 9-6 lead.
Taylor Kohlwey's three-run home run scored
Timmy Kehren and
Jordan Greenland to give UW-L a 7-6 lead. Cefalu tripled and scored on Cordova's double to make it 8-6 and Cordova later scored on a
Josh Rowles sacrifice for a 9-6 lead.
St. Olaf won the game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, all coming with two outs. Dylan Porter's single made it 9-7 while Erik Curry scored on a wild pitch to make it a one-run contest. Kap Davis then doubled to tie the game at 9-9. Sam Maus was intentionally walked and Nick Kulla reached on UW-L error to load the bases. Jack Schechinger then walked with the bases-loaded to score Davis with the winning run.
Travis Kruckow (2-3) suffered the loss for UW-L. He did not retire a batter while allowing one hit, one run and one walk.
Troy Kenkel started for the Eagles, going 4.1 innings, allowing six hits, five runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out five. Cefalu finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI while Cordova and Buxton-Verstegen both went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Cordova scored two runs and Buxton-Verstegen one.
Joel Zyhowski went 2-for-3 while Kohlwey had three RBI.
Joey Voss (3-0) earned the win for St. Olaf, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing two hits, two runs and one walk with one strikeout. Nate Marshall started for the Oles, going 5.0 innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out five. Maus, Paradise and Davis each had two hits.
Each team scored a run in the first inning in the nightcap Monday. Cefalu hit a one-out solo home run for the second straight game in the top of the first for UW-L while Sam Maus opened the bottom of the inning with a solo home run for St. Olaf. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on Greenland's single to score Zyhowski. The Oles scored three times in the bottom of the second as Porter scored on a wild pitch, Ryan Tapani an RBI double and Sam Maus an RBI single.
St. Olaf tallied four runs in the bottom of the third to take an 8-2 lead. Davis had an RBI single to make it 5-2 while Sam Maus added a two-run double and Schechinger walked with the bases-loaded.
UW-L cut the lead to 8-5 in the top of the fourth on Greeland's three-run home run scoring Rowles and Kehren. The Eagles took an 11-8 lead with six runs in the top of the fifth inning. Cordova scored on a balk to make it 8-6. After walks to Zyhowski and Kehren to load the bases, Greenland hit his second home run of the game with a grand slam to give UW-L a 10-8 lead.
Seth Feldman later scored on Cordova's sacrifice fly.
The Oles cut the lead to 11-9 with a run in the bottom of the fifth on Schechinger's RBI single, but the Eagles scored four runs in the top of the sixth. Zyhowski's single scored Rowles followed by a two-run home run by Kehren. Greenland later scored on a Kohlwey double to finish the scoring.
Jameson Lavery (2-1) earned the win for UW-L, going 3.0 innings, allowing three hits and one run with four strikeouts.
Jake Stern started for the Eagles, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, eight runs and one walk with two strikeouts. Greeland finished 4-for-4 with one double, two home runs, three runs and eight RBI. The eight RBI is tied for second in single-game school history.
Paul Weber finished with eight versus UW-Superior April 23, 1983 while
Dan Heinritz had eight against the Yellowjackets April 30, 1977.
John Knispel set a school record with nine RBI versus UW-Eau Claire May 4, 1951.
Kohlwey went 4-for-5 with an RBI in Monday's nightcap while Zyhowski finished 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Cefalu and Buxton-Verstegen each had two hits.
John Connell (2-2) suffered the loss for St. Olaf, pitching 0.2 of an inning. He allowed two hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks. Kade Cronin started for the Oles, going 2.2 innings, allowing six hits and two runs. Sam Maus went 4-for-5 with two runs and four RBI while TIm Maus, Porter and Davis each had two hits.
The teams combined for 32 hits.
