Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a pair of games with UW-Platteville Thursday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles took the first game, 6-3, before the Pioneers won the nightcap, 4-1. UW-L, receiving votes on this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll, is now 18-6 overall and 6-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). UW-Platteville is now 14-20 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
In the opener, UW-L was able to plate one run in the bottom of the first inning.
Alecia Faber was hit-by-pitch and stole second. She scored on an RBI double to right field off the bat of
Lindsey Sheehan. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
Emilie Wiltzius singled, stole second and scored on a
Kallie Krech single. In the bottom of the fifth, Krech and
Emily Holldorf reached on UW-Platteville errors. Faber executed a squeeze play to score Krech for a 3-0 lead. Sheehen later hit a three-run home run to left field for a 6-0 advantage.
UW-Platteville scored twice in the top of the sixth inning on back-to-back home runs from Lisa Karau and Carley Rote. The Pioneers added a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Karau.
Megan Nelson (7-4) earned the victory for UW-L. She threw 5.0 innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs.
Heather Grelle pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing two hits and one run with one strikeout. Sheehan went 2-for-2 with a run scored, double, home run and four RBI. Wiltzius finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Jess Butzen (6-9) recorded the loss for UW-Platteville. She pitched 6.0 innings, allowing six runs (two earned) and one walk. Karau went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In the nightcap, UW-Platteville sprinted out to an early lead. The Pioneers scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the first. Ellyn Goerdt had a two-run single and Chelsea Walker a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. UW-Platteville scored its fourth run on a UW-L fielding error.
UW-L scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning on
Katie Fink's home run.
Jessie Carignan (5-2) took the loss for the Eagles, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned) with two strikeouts. Grelle pitched 4.2 innings in relief, allowing one hit while striking out three.
Kelli Anderson went 3-for-3 whle Fink, Wiltzius and
Mary Kate Pryor finished 1-for-3.
Keri Treml (5-8) earned the victory for UW-Platteville, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, one run and one walk. Goerdt finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
UW-L returns to action Friday, April 18 at UW-Oshkosh for a conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
