Box Score 2 Mauston, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with St. Norbert College (Wis.) Saturday afternoon at Woodside Sports Complex. The Green Knights won the opener, 5-4, before the Eagles came back to win the nightcap, 6-5. UW-L is now 11-3 on the season while St. Norbert (Wis.) is 4-9.
In the opener, UW-L took an early 4-0 lead. The Eagles tallied two runs in the top of the first.
Emily Holldorf opened the game with a single and moved to second on
Alecia Faber's sacrifice bunt.
Katie Fink followed with a single to score Holldorf for a 1-0 lead. Fink moved up to second on the throw.
Lindsey Sheehan then knocked in Fink with a single for a 2-0 advantage.
UW-L added two runs in the top of the second.
Mary Kate Pryor started the frame with a single and advanced to third after a pair of groundouts. Faber then doubled home Pryor to make it 3-0 and Fink's single drove in Faber for a 4-0 advantage.
St. Norbert cut the lead to 4-2 with two runs in the bottom of the third. Tayloer Long scored on a Jessica DeMeuse single to make it 4-1 and DeMeuse later sored on Codi Jenshak's RBI single.
The Green Knights tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a JoAnna Ruppa single and DeMeuse run-scoring double.
St. Norbert scored the game's winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Samantha Gross opened with a single. After a strikeout, Gross moved to second on a DeMeuse sacrifice bunt. Abby Gildernick was intentionally walked and Gross scored the winning run on a two-out single from Jenshak.
Megan Nelson (4-3) took the loss for UW-L, pitching 2.1 innings in relief. She allowed two hits, one run and two walks while striking out three.
Heather Grelle started for the Eagles, going 4.1 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs and one walk with one strikeout.
Fink finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Morgan Rusch (3-6) earned the win for St. Norbert, going 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs and two walks with one strikeout. DeMeuse, Jenshak and Long each had two hits for the Green Knights.
In the nightcap, UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Faber's solo home run. The Eagles added four runs in the third inning. Sheehan's single scored Holldorf for a 2-0 advantage. After a Nelson single,
Kelli Anderson's two-run double knocked in Sheehan and Nelson to make it 4-0.
Jessie Carignan's RBI single scored Anderson for a 5-0 lead.
St. Norbert cut the deficit to 5-4 with a four runs in the top of the fourth. Jenshak's single scored DeMeuse to make it 5-1. After a strikeout. the Green Knights' Emily Laufer hit a three-run home run to cut the lead to 5-4.
The Eagles added a run in the bottom of the fifth as Sheehan scored on Anderson's sacrifice fly.
The Green Knights scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning on a Gross RBI triple, but was left stranded to end the game.
Carignan (3-0) earned the victory for UW-L, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing five hits and four runs with four strikeouts. Nelson picked up her first save of the season, going 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and one run with three strikeouts.
Nelson was 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and one RBI while Anderson finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and three RBI. Sheehan was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Brianna Byrne (0-2) suffered the loss for St. Norbert, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs.
Gildernick and Jenshak each had two hits while Laufer totaled three RBI.
UW-L returns to action Thursday, April 3 hosting UW-Whitewater at 3 p.m. in its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener.
