UW-L Softball Splits Doubleheader at Tucson Invitational

Lindsey Sheehan went 6-for-6 with 5 RBI in Friday's games.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split its final pair of games at the Tucson Invitational Friday.  The Eagles recorded a 15-0 victory over Grinnell College (Iowa) in five innings before falling to Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) 4-1.  UW-L is now 10-2 on the season.  

The Eagles got off to a fast start against Grinnell putting up two runs in the first inning.  Emily Holldorf led off the inning by drawing a walk.  Alecia Faber grounded out to advance Holldorf to second.  Katie Fink was able to single to left field to advance Holldorf to third followed by Lindsey Sheehan's single to centerfield to score Holldorf.  Jessie Carignan reached on an error and load the bases and Kelli Anderson's infield single scored Fink to make it 2-0.  

UW-L was able to pull away in the top of the second inning.  Katie Krech started the inning with an infield single.  Holldorf then reached on an error with Krech advancing to third.  Faber singled to knock in  Krech to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Holldorf and Faber move up on a wild pitch.  Fink belted a single to center field to score Holldorf and Sheehan's two-run double scoring Fink and Faber made it 6-0.  

Not to be outdone, Carignan tripled scoring Sheehan and Anderson followed with a double to score Carignan.  After moving to third on a ground out, Anderson was able to score on a sacrifice bunt by Mary Kate Pryor to make it 9-0.  

UW-L was able to tack on a couple of runs in the top of the third inning.  Holldorf led-off with a single.  Katrina O'Keefe had a pinch hit single moving Holldorf to third.  Sheehan followed with a sacrifice fly  to score Holldorf.  Carignan singled to score O'Keefe for a 11-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, UW-L added four more runs. Hailey Kunz had a pinch hit single to start the rally and scored on Krech's triple.  Erin Maletzke walked as a pinch hitter.  Greta Gumness, who had come in for Faber, hit a two-run double to score Maletzke and Krech.  O'Keefe followed with a single to put runers on the corners.  Sheehan hit another double to score Gumness and 15-0 lead.  

Heather Grelle earned the victory for the Eagles.  She threw 3.0 innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Ashley Braund pitched 2.0 innings, allowing one hit.  

At the plate, Sheehan went 3-for-3 with five RBI and one run scored. Fink and O'Keefe both finished 2-for-2.  Fink added an RBI and two runs scored.  Anderson, Carignan, and Gumness each added two RBI.  UW-L went 18-for-32 (.563) at the plate.  The 18 hits is tied for fifth-most  in a game while the .563 batting average is tied for 11th.  

UW-L was only able to score one run in the loss versus Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in the following game.  

The Gusties were able to get an early lead pushing two across in the bottom of the first inning.  Shelby Nosan led off with a single and wmoved to second on a Breanne Rentschler sacrifice bunt.  Kaitlyn Bicek then singled to score Nosan.  Gustavus added back-to-back singles by Kailey Morgan and Sarah Rozell to score Bicek.  

UW-L was able to cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the thrid inning.  Pryor belted a lead-off double.  Krech followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Pryor to third.  Holldorf followed with an RBI single.  

The Gusties were able to add insurance runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings.  In the fifth, Nosan's home run made it 3-1.  Paige Breneman hit a pinch-hit single to start the sixth. She moved to second on a Carly Klass sacrifice bunt.  After a hit batter, Nosan doubled to score Breneman.

UW-L went down in order in the top of the seventh.  

Megan Nelson suffered the loss for the Eagles, throwing 6.0 innings, allowing four runs while striking out two.  Sheehan finished 3-for-3 at the plate.  Pryor and Holldorf both added a hit while Pryor scored the only Eagles' run.  

Gustavus' Nosan finished the game 4-for-4 with a home run, double, two RBI, and two runs scored.  

UW-L returns to action Friday, March 28 at city-rival Viterbo University (Wis.) at 4:30 p.m.
