Box Score Tucson, Ariz.- The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned its third straight win with a 15-1 victory over Carleton College (Minn.) Thursday in the Tucson Invitational. The Eagles improve to 6-5 on the season while the Knights fall to 0-2.
Taylor Kohlwey led-off the game with a base hit and scored on a three-base error by Carleton off the bat of
Bryce Barsness, who also scored on the play. After
Cole Cefalu walked,
Alex Cordova and
Travis Buxton-Verstegen followed with back-to-back triples increasing the lead to 4-0. Buxton-Verstegen would later score on an RBI groundout by
Timmy Kehren.
The Eagles plated two more runs in the third inning. Cefalu singled and scored on Cordova's second triple of the game. Buxton-Verstegen followed with a single scoring Cordova to make it 7-0.
Three more runs came across for UW-L in the fourth.
Josh Rowles and Kohlwey started the inning with singles. A Carleton error moved Kohlwey to third and scored Rowles. Cefalu followed with a sacrifice fly making it 9-0. Cordova would reach on a fielder's choice and later scored on a single by Buxton-Verstegen.
Carleton's lone run came in the sixth inning on an RBI triple by Hayden Tsutsui.
UW-L scored another run in the seventh inning.
Shane Adler reached base after being hit-by-pitch and later scored on a Rowles single increasing the Eagles' lead to 11-1.
Cordova's two-out single in the eighth started a three-run inning for UW-L. After Buxton-Verstegen's run-scoring double, Adler would be hit by a pitch again and
Cole Hoyt drew a walk to load the bases.
Seth Feldman's single would knock in Buxton-Verstegen.
Carter Hoffman was then hit-by-pitch to bring in the third run of the inning and give the Eagles a 14-1 lead.
Alex Brown opened the top of the ninth with a triple and scored on
Joel Zyhowski's single to finish the scoring.
Buxton-Verstegen finished 4-for-5 and drove in four runs. Cordova was 3-for-5 and scored four times. Rowles and Kohlwey each had two hits. Adler and Cefalu both scored twice.
Jake Stern (1-0) picked up the win for UW-L, pitching 7.0 innings allowing one run, five hits and one walk while striking out three.
UW-L returns to action Friday, March 21 versus California Lutheran University in its spring trip finale. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. (Central Time).
