Softball Team Earns Two Wins at Tucson Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned victories over Crown College (Minn.) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (Calif.) at the Tucson Invitational Games.  The Eagles earned a 14-1 victory over Crown College in five innings before defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) by the score of 6-1.  UW-L improves to 8-0 on the season.  

Against Crown, UW-L struck in the top of the first inning when Alecia Faber reached on an error.  Katie Fink followed with a double scoring Faber for a 1-0 lead.

Kelli Anderson led things off for UW-L in the top of the second with a walk.  She scored on a home run by Emilie Wiltzius.  After a strikeout, Katrina O'Keefe singled and later scored on a single by Emily Holldorf.  Fink then doubled and scored on a two-run double from Lindsey Sheehan for a 6-0 advantage.

The Eagles pushed acorss four runs in the top of the third inning for a 10-0 lead.  Anderson led off the inning with a single and scored on a single from O'Keefe.  Hailey Kunz scored on an error by the Crown shortstop off the bat of Fink.  Sheehan singled driving in two runs.

UW-L tacked on four more runs in the fourth.  Ashley Braund reached on an error to lead off the inning.  After two singles loaded the bases, Erin Maletzke's ground-out scored Braund.  A Greta Gumness singled knocked in Kunz.  After a single by Fink, Sheehan's two-run single scored Gumness and O'Keefe.  

In the bottom of the inning, the Storm pushed one run across after a lead off double from Sarah Petkau.  Petkau would score on a fielder's choice by Kendra Magaard to cut the score to 14-1.  N

Jessie Carignan picked up the win for UW-L, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing one run while striking out three.

Sheehan finished 3-for-4 with five RBI.  Fink and O'Keefe were both went 3-for-4 while Fink added one RBI and one run scored.  O'Keefe also scored three runs.   Kunz finished the 2-for-3 with two runs.

Against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.), the Eagles took an early lead scoring twice in the top of the first.  Holldorf led-off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Faber.  Sheehan scored Holldorf on a single to right field.  After a Megan Nelson walk, Sheehan scored on a single from Anderson to make it 2-0.  

After a scoreless second inning, UW-L increased the lead by adding three runs in the top of the third.  After two infield singles by Fink and Sheehan, Nelson singled up the middle to score Fink and advanced to second on the throw to the plate.  Anderson had an RBI bunt single scoring Sheehan and moving Nelson to third.  Nelson then scored on a sacrifice bunt from Wiltzius to make it 5-0.  

UW-L increased its lead with a run in the top of the fourth.  Holldorf started the inning with an infield single and moved to second on Faber's sacrifice bunt.  Fink followed with a single to move Holldorf to third, who later scored on a sacrifice fly from Sheehan.  

The lone Athena run came in the bottom of the seventh inning after a leadoff double by Katie Savard.  Savard scored on a Morgan Beltz single.  

Megan Nelson earned the victory for UW-L, going 7.0 innings, allowing four hits, one run and one walk with two strikeouts. 

Sheehan finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs.  Fink and Holldorf each went 2-for-4 while Holldorf scored two runs and Fink one.  

UW-L returns to action Thursday, March 20 with a pair of games.  The Eagles face Denison University (Ohio) at 11 a.m. followed by Marian University (Wis.) at 1 p.m.
